Fancy Having Your Picture Taken?

Attention all budding models! The Library will shortly be embarking on a new photography project and we’re looking for willing volunteers to pose for us.

We’d like to take a few more pictures of the Library ‘In Action’ for our new-look website (coming soon!), and in order to do this we need some students to be doing the actual action!

As an added inducement (as if any extra were required!) we’ll throw in coffee and maybe a biscuit or two, because it’s a thirsty business, photography (and our coffee is pretty darn good!)

A Year in the Life of an Undergraduate

 The first year in the life of every new undergraduate can be a heady time of confusion and uncertainty (mixed with a little fun… and learning, of course!). So we in the Library have come up with something that we hope will help new students navigate between milestones during the formative twelve months of your tenure.

A Year in the Life of an Undergraduate is a time-line that recreates the likely course of a first-year undergraduate, highlighting key events and periods and where the best places are to go for help with them. Charting not just academic events such as term & exam times but social and Student Union events, we hope this will prove to be a handy guide for all new students (and maybe a few old ones too!)

The time-line has been created using the Make History E-timeline Authoring Tool (or Make History for short), which is a software package developed by e-Learning and History staff at Loughborough University. We’ll be updating it as & when new & relevent information is made available, and we’re very keen to get your feedback too, so feel free to post your comments using the link below.

Library awarded grant for People’s Record London Olympics project

The Library has been awarded a further People’s Record grant award. The People’s Record aims to create a collective record of the public’s response to hosting the 2012 Games.

 

The work will be done jointly with the Centre for Olympic Studies & Research and will produce videos exploring the experiences of Loughborough University students who have volunteered for helping with the London 2012 Olympic Games. These videos will be published on the People’s Record website www.peoplesrecord.org.uk. Videos from two previous Library’s People’s Record projects are already available there. University Library’s London Olympics projects

The Library has been working with the University’s Centre for Olympic Studies & Research on 3 projects about the London 2012 Olympics. These projects were funded by the UK’s Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).  The results of these projects are available to all:

  1. The first one was in 2009 and gathered views from Loughborough people about previous Olympics, the Beijing Games and the forthcoming London 2012 Games
  2. In 2010, videos were produced of elite Loughborough University athletes talking about the Olympics, their aspirations and what their sport means to them
  3. Further videos were produced for the next project in 2011 exploring with various groups the perceptions of the impact and value of the Paralympics Games.

These are part of the Peoples Record project (managed by the MLA) which is the first co-ordinated record by a host nation of the public’s reaction to the Games. If you would like to know more about the Library’s contribution, contact Dr Graham Walton (j.g.walton@lboro.ac.uk).

Library Photographic Competition 2011

The Library has chosen the winners for the 2011 photographic competition. The theme was celebrating 30 years of the Pilkington Library and 123 photographs were received from 46 people. The winners are:

1st place – “Meeting place” by Daniel Child

2nd place – “Frame of books” by Subramanya Devanira

3rd place – “Northwest Passage” by Christopher Stokes

Prize for best enhanced photograph – “Green” by Kevin Tang

Research and academic staff – we need your help to pilot a tutorial on promoting your research

The Library with partners from other insitutions, have developed an online tutorial on “Promoting your research”.  We are currently seeking volunteers to try the module and provide feedback through:

  • observing how two people use the tutorial on Wednesday 4th May
  • a small focus group on Monday 9th May at 11 am in Training room 1

The module should take less than an hour to complete and participants can choose which units they wish to dip in and out of.  The module should be available for piloting during the week  starting May 3rd.

If you are free to pilot the module and be part of this focus group, please get in touch with Roo at r.e.stubbings@lboro.ac.uk by Tuesday 3rd May 2011.

In return for your time, we will provide you with morning coffee & cake, and a chance to share ideas and practice with colleagues from other parts of the university.

The Library is the lead partner of the project group called the East Midlands Research Support Group (made up of partners from Coventry University, De Montfort University, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham).  The group is producing an online course that will provide researchers with the appropriate skills to enable them to find, manage and publish information effectively.

Library Catalogue Plus to be launched during the summer!

During the summer the Library will be introducing its new solution for the discovery and delivery of information resources, both electronic and print, to you. Library Catalogue Plus will replace the existing Library Catalogue and MetaLib with one simple search box that allows you to search across the Library’s print holdings, electronic journals and e-books, and the information databases currently available via MetaLib. Library Catalogue Plus will be a quick and easy way to retrieve the multiplicity of resources that the Library provides.

PhD Students & Supervisors – Your library needs you

We would be delighted if you are willing to take part in a discussion over lunch on Monday 11th April to assist us in a study on the supervisors role in developing their research students’ information and data handling skills.

RIN is funding the project, which is investigating the role and perceptions of PhD supervisors in ensuring research students possess the necessary level of information literacy to pursue their careers successfully in academia and beyond.  RIN has produced several reports on researcher behaviour in different disciplines, publishing patterns and costs, and the availability of journals (see www.rin.ac.uk).

Loughborough has been selected as a case study and we are looking to hold two focus groups on Monday 11th April:

  • PhD students in Training room 1 on Level 3 of the Library between 12:00 – 1:00
  • Doctoral supervisors in Training room 1 on Level 3 of the Library between 1:15 – 2:15

In return for an hour of your time, we will provide you with a buffet lunch and a chance to share ideas and practice with colleagues from other parts of the university.

University Library 2011 photography competition

Do you want to win an Amazon voucher up to the value of £125? If the answer is yes, then why not enter the 2011 Loughborough University Library photography competition? The University’s Pilkington Library is in its 30th year and the photography competition is part of the celebrations taking place in 2011. The theme is “Celebrating 30 years of the Pilkington Library”. It is open to individual interpretation but entries must capture what should be celebrated about the University Library.

Library well represented at excellent e-learning showcase

e-learning showcase 2011The e-learning showcase gave the Library a wonderful opportunity to highlight how we can support learning and teaching across campus, especially in relation to:

* the new version of the online reading list system

* use of QuestionMark Perception to assess students understanding of information handling and plagiarism

* e-readers and how they may be used in an academic environment.
