AU Women’s Hockey l Focus Series

We talk to Emma from the AU Women’s Hockey committee to find out why you should give a taster session a go this Freshers week, and what it’s like to be a team member!

What levels of experience do you cater to?

We have a range of players within our club, from international players right through to those who have played for their school’s 1st X1 before coming to university.

It is a very competitive club with 5 teams, with all teams competing in both BUCS and Saturday league matches. The 1s compete in National League, down to the 5s who compete in our local county league.

Why did you join this club?

I joined the club as I thoroughly enjoyed playing hockey before university and wanted to continue playing to a high standard during my time at university.

Joining the club allowed me to develop with the high quality training, whilst also meeting some of my closest friends.

Best or most memorable moments from your time in the club?

That’s a hard one – I have had so many good memories during my time at the club. One of them has to be reaching the BUCS Trophy Semi Finals in my second year of university with the 2s. Even though we narrowly lost, the BUCS cup run and performance of our team was incredible. My second memorable moment has to be the club winning AU Club of the Year last year.

Describe your club in three words…

Friendly, competitive, magnificent.

Aside from the sport, what kind of social activities does your club get up to?

In the past season as a club we have undertaken a wide range of social activities, as we not only enjoy playing hockey together but also socialising away from the pitch too. We supported Leicester Tigers, bounced on trampolines, raised money through a charity cycle and socialised over team and club meals. Also as a club we enjoy celebrating and socialising together on a night out.

What would you say to someone thinking of picking up the sport?

Go for it and don’t be afraid to ask for tips from coaches and experienced players around you. When the first hurdle comes as a hockey player, don’t give up; work hard and you’ll reach your goal. Picking up hockey will give you new skills and you’ll meet many new friends.

Anything else we should know?

Our Fresher trials are coming up on the 1st October – if you’re interested in playing make sure you come along!
