Formula Student l Focus Series

Monty, chair for Loughborough’s Formula Student team, tells us all about what it’s like to build and race a formula racing car – and why he hopes to see you at the Freshers bazaar!

What is your society all about?

The Loughborough Formula Student Team is a society for people that are passionate about motor racing. We are a purely student led team that every year designs, manufactures and then races a formula racing car.

We cater for people on all courses, not only those doing engineering, as running a team requires business acumen as well as other responsibilities such as: obtaining and managing sponsorship, social media commitments, livery design and many more.

What sort of events are put on by the society?

The bulk of the manufacturing is carried out on Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays. These times are perfect for getting involved, learning about the car and getting to know the team.

Typically we go to 2-3 competitions around Europe each year to compete against other universities in static and dynamic events. This is the most exciting time of the year as we get to see all our hard work come together.

Why, when and how did you join?

I joined during my first year having visited the team at the societies fair. After attending the induction day I turned up on a regular basis to help out and quickly my responsibilities increased up to the point of becoming Head of Composites in my second year.

The motivation behind joining was down to wanting to learn more about racing cars and to develop key skills in a hands-on environment.

Describe your society in three words…

Committed, motivated and exciting.

What would you say to someone considering joining?

Everyone is welcome so there is no excuse to not get involved! If you’d like to find out more please come and see us at the societies fair and we look forward to getting you up and running.

Anything else we should know?

Yes, you do get to the drive the car at some point once you become a dedicated team member. Believe me, it’s worth it!
