AU American Football l Focus Series

Picture of AuthorWe’ve spoken to the Club President of AU American Football, James Bacon, to find out more about the sport and what makes their club unique.

What levels of experience do you cater to?

We cater for a wide range of abilities, from absolute beginners to international level players, all within the same team.

Why did you join this club?

I was looking for something a bit different to the “traditional” sports you get taught at school, so I came along to a training session, I fitted in right away, so joined as soon as I could.

Best or most memorable moments from your time in the club?

Beating the defending national champions (Stirling) at home in 2014

Describe your club in three words!

Ambitious, Motivated, Family

Aside from the sport, what kind of social activities does your club get up to?

Our training is pretty intense, so we don’t get as many opportunities to go on nights out as other clubs, despite this we have three formal events a year, the biggest of which being our homecoming weekend, usually on the same weekend as the Superbowl. This is a huge get-together where we try to get all the ex-players to Loughborough for a meal and night out on the Saturday, then we have a Superbowl party on the Sunday.

Aside from this, we go to a pub in town every Sunday to watch the NFL.

Last words – what would you say to someone thinking of picking up the sport?

We are one of the oldest American Football clubs in the country, having competed in the top flight of competition for the past 25 years, we currently compete in the most competitive league in the country.

We are internationally renowned for excellence, having recently hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars UK player’s camp

If you’re looking for a fast paced, physical and fun game, where you have the opportunity to play against, and alongside some of the best players in the country, then look no further than American Football!
