8 reasons to vote for Adam Peaty in this year’s SPOTY!

If you didn’t already know, Adam Peaty – swimmer for Great Britain, three time European swimmer of the year and Loughborough based Olympian – is in the running for BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year 2016. So, come on – let’s show some of that famous #LboroFamily spirit and vote for him.

Still need persuading?  Luckily, we’ve listed eight reasons why you should vote for him below. Enjoy!

1.    Peaty was Great Britain’s first medalist of the Rio 2016 games, claiming a gold medal on the third day of the Olympics. Great Britain came second overall, beating China with an impressive 67 medals (27 of which were gold!)

2.    As a child, Peaty had a phobia of water and would cry when his mother tried to bathe him. Now he’s a world champion – anything is possible!

 3.    He broke the 100m world record during the British Championships in 2015, and then broke his own record in Rio. Peaty wasn’t done – in the finals of the 100m breaststroke, he broke it again with 57.13 seconds the following night. He also holds the World Record for the 50m breaststroke with 26.42, and also the 4 x 100 metre mixed medley relay with 3:41.71.

4.    Melanie Marshall, Peaty’s coach, is a Loughborough University alumna, as well as being a two-time Olympian and five-time Olympic finalist.

5.    Peaty’s Nan became a viral sensation at the start of Rio 2016 – remember #OlympicNan?

6.    He became Great Britain’s first male champion since 1988 when he took gold in Rio.

7.    He trains right here on campus, both in the swimming pool as well as Powerbase, making him part of the #LboroFamily!

8.    Peaty won two medals in Rio, gold and silver, which were part of the 34 medals won by Loughborough athletes at both the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2016!
