Celebrating Women’s Sport Week 2017

20 June 2017

2 mins

This week, alongside a national campaign by Women in Sport, we’re sharing some of our sporting success from our female students, graduates and players. Here are some of our highlights from this week, but for the full list, keep an eye on the #WSW2017 hashtag on Twitter.

Loughborough Lightning

Our hugely successful Loughborough Lightning Netball, Cricket and now Rugby teams are shining examples of top national women’s sport at Loughborough. The teams have built a huge community of fans backing them all the way. Most recently, Lightning Netball came a close second after an unprecedented 17-1 W/L during the season. Looking forward, Lightning Cricket will get underway with their first game in August.

On campus

We strive to make sure there is a huge range of sporting opportunities available to all at Loughborough. Off the back of the national This Girl Can campaign in 2016, students at Loughborough started the spin-off Lboro Girls Can, highlighting fitness, sport and volunteering options to our female students. They even managed to get the Vice-Chancellor involved!

Our Alumni

It’s hard to ignore the widespread sporting achievements by Loughborough our alumni. We particularly love this Women in Sport Week 2016 blog from Tanni Grey-Thompson. Our female alumni made up the backbone of the England Women’s Hockey success in Rio; no less than five female players made up the England side. We also featured top swimming coach and Loughborough graduate Melanie Marshall in this video interview, proving women can succeed as elite coaches.

Rio 2016

Of the 44 medals Loughborough ‘won’ at the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2016, 18 of them were brought home by female graduates, players, students and athletes, including the recent world record-breaking Sophie Hahn, and Britain’s first hammer medallist, Sophie Hitchon.
