7 fun & whacky fundraising events

13 April 2016

The campus is a hub of activity, not least because of the fantastic fundraising events we hold here every single year. Both students and staff play an important role and work extremely hard to raise money for local, national and international charities – but who said fundraising couldn’t be fun? Here’s a cheeky peek at some of the fun and whacky fundraising events both our students and staff took part in. Enjoy, we did.

1. Mongolia Charity Rally

Last year, Baby Don’t Yurt Me, a two person team made a real difference by travelling 10,000 miles to deliver a van to ‘Go Help’, a charity based in Mongolia.

Charles and Nikki, two Loughborough students went on an epic road trip that wound its way half way across the world from Brussels, over mountains, across deserts and through rivers to the rugged expanse of the ancient Mongol empire.

2. Apocalypse

Students were able to put their strategies into action and see how they would fare under a zombie apocalypse. Students split into teams and did a 5k run across campus – their aim was to fend off the flesh eating zombies and locate the antidote. They then had to return safely to the Students’ Union and see if they had been infected or if they were survivors.

 3. Colour Dash

The first charity event to be held on campus every year by RAG, the colour dash is reminiscent of the Holi fest and involves a 5k run and lots of dry paint. It’s a great way to get to know the campus and its lots of fun – so much so, that we have students from all years coming back for more!

4. Lost

How do you think you would cope if you were ‘kidnapped’ and left stranded 100 miles away from the Loughborough Students’ Union without any money or a map? This might sound mad, but it’s great way to raise lots of money for charity.

Those who sign up – and trust me, there are lots – find that it’s not just their nerves which are tested. The winning team need to get back to the LSU before all of the other teams, so the ability to keep calm, think fast and outside of the box is essential.

5. Tandem Skydive

It takes a lot to jump willingly out of a plane, but earlier this year, staff across the University took part in a tandem skydive raising money for;

  • SSAFA
  • The Maggie Centre
  • British Heart Foundation
  • Rhino Ark
  • Cancer and MS Support Charity
  • MacMillan Cancer Support
  • The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust
  • Cancer Research UK
  • LOROS Hospice
  • Reality Gives
  • MS-UK
  • Heart Link Children’s Charity

Showing, it’s not just the students who have the guts to do something daring for charity.

6. Firework Display

Sure, this is definitely more of a spectator sport but it’s definitely lots of fun for those that choose to attend. But don’t take our word for it, take a sneak peek at the video right here;

7. Mount Kilimanjaro trek

There is nothing more exhilarating than travelling all the way to Tanzania to conquer the almighty Mount Kilimanjaro. Not only is this a great way to raise money for charity, it is also a once in a lifetime experience for those who decide to do it. In the past, our students have done a number of other treks including Morocco trek, Inca trek and Uganda gorilla trek.

As a university we’re extremely proud of the money which both our students and staff raise for charity, and actively encourage everyone to get involved!
