Loughborough at first glance

10 May 2016

3 mins

Unlike the many students here I did not come to Loughborough to study but to work as an intern for two months with the Web and Digital team.

When I first arrived on the campus, coming from the train station, I took the bus to university, and it seemed to be a never-ending ride until I reached University Lodge, where I’m going to live for the next two months. A long ride not because the town is so huge, but because the campus is. I would never have imagined the campus to be so big. It seems like a miracle I made my way to my office, without a map, only two days later.

Strolling around the campus I saw a variety of accommodation the students were living in. People were walking the small paths between the flats. Most of them seemed to be coming from or going to join some sport activities.

Walking into town, which took me around 20 minutes, it went on feeling like Loughborough is a real place for students. Every other metre a group of students was walking on the pavement heading for Loughborough. The town is has got some pretty places: small cafes, shops, and the Queen’s Park.

I remember some things that came to my mind right after my second day:

1. If you ever choose to take the bus, whether to Loughborough or some other places nearby as Leicester or Nottingham, you will notice that everyone happens to be really kind to the driver. Actually people don’t leave the bus without saying “thanks”. There is even a sign at the entrance which says “say hello to the driver”. I do not know whether this is a common thing in other cities/countries but it is not in Germany!

2. Besides this, there also seems to be humorous people living in this city as I found this sign on a street:

3. Nobody seems to freeze in Loughborough. Is it a kind of “English thing”? While I am wearing my winter jacket and a scarf at 10 degrees, people (well, students) around here wear shorts and flip-flops. Is that a thing all of you tend to do?

To sum it up: Loughborough (University) seems so far a really great place to be and you feel at home immediately. Not only because people thank the bus driver but because there are young people all around you and already after a few days you will know Loughborough inside out  – in a positive way.
