The University’s School of Business & Economics, in association with FutureLearn, is starting another massive open online course (MOOC) next Monday (20th October) on the subject of ‘Innovation and Enterprise’.
The course will last 6 weeks, and will study the four main areas that influence the whole process of innovation and enterprise, using a model specially created by the MOOC team.
The aim of MOOC is to connect learners from all over the globe with high quality educators, and with each other; providing an enjoyable, social experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss what you’ve studied, in order to make fresh discoveries and form new ideas.

The Library is currently triailing a database from GSE Research, the Sustainable Organization Library (SOL), which is now the leading dedicated collection on sustainability in the world.
Relevant to a wide range of subject disciplines, including social sciences, politics, environmenal studies and business & economics, the database contains:

Victoria Adams of the company information specialists and database providers Bureau Van Dijk will be visiting the Library this Thursday morning (26th June) to give a demonstration of two of our most popular economics databases, Bankscope and Zephyr.
Bankscope provides details on 11,000 World Banks including up to 8 years of detailed financial information on the top 6,500 European banks, the top 1,400 North American banks, all the 200 Japanese commercial and sogo banks, more than 2,900 other major banks, and the leading 38 supranational banking and financial organisations.
Zephyr is an information solution containing M&A, IPO and venture capital deals with links to detailed financial company information. ZEPHYR now contains information on over half a million transactions (August 2007). Up to 100,000 new deals are added per year. The database is also expanding to cover more historical American and Asian transactions. Zephyr has five years of global coverage and includes deals involving European or American companies going back to 1997.
This session should prove to be of immense interest and value to Business and Economics staff and students. It takes place in Library Seminar Room 1 at 10am. No booking is necessary – just turn up.
Loughborough University is offering two courses as part of FutureLearn, the first UK-led provider of massive open online courses (MOOCs). Both courses are free and can be taken by anyone from around the world.
‘Innovation and enterprise‘ will give you the opportuntity to learn how an innovative idea becomes a reality. The course is led by our internationally renowned School of Business and Enterprise and runs for six weeks, starting on 14 April 2014.
‘Getting a grip on mathematical symbolism‘ will teach aspiring engineers and scientists to think mathematically and explore essential concepts. The three-week course is run by our award-winning Mathematics Education Centre and begins on 28 April 2014.

This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week, and to celebrate the occasion the University’s Enterprise office is running a series of events across campus.
Over the week staff and students at Loughborough University will have the opportunity to develop their social enterprise ideas, win money and meet some of the world’s most successful organisations including The Big Issue, The Co-operative Group, The Eden Project and IKEA. There will be workshops, forums and a £37.5k prize fund to support your most promising ideas for social enterprises.

Peter Cruddas, Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 and CEO of CMC Markets, will be on campus again to share his experiences of building an international financial trading company from an initial personal investment of just £10,000 into a one billion pound company without any outside shareholders or debt. Peter left school at 15 without any formal education and from a deprived background with challenging family circumstances. His is a true rags to riches story.
This year’s event will take the format of a question and answer session – the entrepreneur in the hot seat. As well as inviting you to register for the event, we are also asking you to submit interesting and challenging questions for Peter. A selection of the best questions will be chosen for Peter to answer at the event.
The event will take place in the School of Business & Economics at 5pm on 1st Dec 2010. Everyone attending the event is invited to a buffet reception afterwards.

The Library will be hosting its first Database in Focus for the Semester on Thursday 28th October in Training Room 1 from 10AM to 11.30AM. The database under the microscope on this occasion will be FAME (Financial Analysis Made Easy).
FAME provides financial details for over 3.4 million companies in the UK and Republic of Ireland. FAME includes company accounts, ratios, activities, ownership and management data for the largest 2.4 million UK and Irish companies with summary information for a further 950,000 smaller businesses.
This session will outline how to:
– Access the database.
– Search the database effectively.
– Save bibliographic references.
– Keep up-to-date.
You are also given the opportunity to search the database yourself.
