Borrowing Books During the Summer

As summer hurtles by many of you may be casting your minds towards borrowing books over the vacation – and many of you may need to bring some of those books back before you leave!

As it stands at the moment, all Long Loan books for Undergraduates, Finalists, Postgrads (including CDS registered) are being issued until Wednesday 20th June – the very last day of term.

From Monday 11th June all Long Loan and Week Loan books will be issued over the summer vacation to either Wednesday 3rd October or Friday 5th October 2018 depending on your status.

All Long Loan and Week loan books borrowed by Finalists will only issue until Wednesday 20th June – we will be issuing reminders to Finalists about clearing their accounts nearer the time.

All External user and Alumni loans remain on a rolling 4-week or one week loan.

High Demand loans, as always, remain the same.

Leisure Reading books will also issue until the 20th June, up until 11th June when they will also issue over the summer vacation.

Please remember that all books are subject to recall over the vacation, so keep an eye on your emails unless you want a nasty surprise when you come back!

Check In, Check Out Email Notifications

New system, new features! We’ve recently rolled out a different – to say nothing of sustainable! – method of informing users of their daily check out – check in activity.

From now on, users will receive an email overnight that summarises all the books that they have borrowed and/or returned during the day. Not only will this help users to keep a record of their borrowing (and hopeful resolve a lot more of the queries we get at the desk!), but it will also help the environment, as it means users no longer have to print out receipts for transactions at the machines. We did a ballpark estimate that this facility would save us at least 150,000 feet of paper receipt roll every year!

Printed receipts are still available for those who want them, and a receipt will always be printed for any financial transactions done at the self issue machines.

Easter Vacation Loan Period

Our extended Easter vacation loan period begins this Wednesday, 7th March. All books borrowed from the Library or renewed after this date will be issued until the following dates for the following users:

  • Long Loan and Week Loan books for Undergraduates, will be due for return on Wednesday 18th April.
  • Long Loan and Week Loan books for Undergraduate Finalists and  Postgraduates will be due for return on Friday 20th April.
  • All Leisure Reading Books will be issued until Wednesday 18th April.

Please note we do NOT recall books over the Easter vacation, but any reserved books borrowed from our hold shelf which still have outstanding requests may only be borrowed for one week – as always, please check the issue date when borrowing or renewing a book to avoid any fines.

New Semester, New Library Catalogue (Plus Borrowing Changes)

In the switch over between semesters, the Library introduced its new Library Catalogue and library management system.  This has brought a few changes, which are detailed below.

New Library Catalogue Plus:

1. Clearer search tabs:

As well as having a cleaner interface (as appreciated by students in our pre-launch user testing), there are now only two search tabs – Catalogue and Articles Plus.

Catalogue searches for books, journal titles, DVDs and other material held by the Library and all items from the Loughborough University Institutional Repository.

Articles Plus provides access to online full-text journal articles and conference papers accessible at Loughborough University.

2. Better filtering

When you get your results, you can now specify whether you want results from the Loughborough or London libraries and can even narrow down to just e-resources.

3. Access to subject specific databases:

Subject guides provide access to the key databases for your subject area and can be found from the Library Catalogue Plus screen (see below) or directly from: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/library/students/subjectguides/

Borrowing Changes

1. Longer high demand loan periods
These will now issue until 23.55 on the next working day instead of 2.30pm (e.g. if you issue a book on Friday, it will be due in at 23.55 on Monday). It is no longer possible to book high demand items for a specific date but users can request them on the catalogue if they are on loan to other users. The fine for high demand books is now £3 per day rather than 50p per hour.

2. High demand books now renewable

As long as no-one else has requested them, high demand books are now renewable.

3. More renewals
Following user feedback, these have been raised. Week loan, long loan and high demand items can all be renewed 10 times by users. Staff/researchers can now renew long loans 3 times and week loan/high demand items 10 times. You can renew books on the catalogue by logging into the My Account section or on the self-service machines in the Library.

4. Courtesy notice emails

We will send out the usual courtesy notice 4 days before a book is due for return and a second reminder email on the actual due date. Because of this, we are not fining on the day a book is due for return – the fine would start the following day. The emails are now called “Library books due for return” as some users had problems with the reminders going into spam folders because they contained the word “loan” in the title.

5. Weekends

Books are no longer due on any weekend. If a week loan is issued on a Sat/Sun it will be due in on the Monday after a week has passed e.g. if a week loan was issued  on Sunday 4th Feb it would be due on Monday 12th Feb not Sunday 11th.

Further information and feedback

If you need any help using the new system or have any feedback– simply email library@lboro.ac.uk, pop into the Library to talk to the staff on the Information Desks or contact your Academic Librarian.

Changes to Library Catalogue Plus – Important Information Regarding E-Shelf Material

At the beginning of Semester 2, the Library will be launching its new and improved Library Catalogue Plus interface. By way of an advanced warning, we’d like to notify people of important changes to the old E-Shelf system on the present interface.

If you have stored records on your e-Shelf in the current catalogue we would encourage you to download them or export them into Mendeley as they won’t be carried over to the new system. You can find further information about Mendeley on our website pages or contact your Academic Librarian for advice.

Further information about changes to the interface will published soon. Stay tuned!

If you would like us to get a copy of a journal article, conference paper or similar item from another library for you before Christmas, please make your request before Friday 15th December 2017. If you make a copy request after this date we will process it after the University reopens on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

Book Loans Over the Christmas Vacation

With Christmas and the end of term looming, we’ve already received several enquiries asking when our Christmas vacation loan period begins.

From Friday 8th December all Long, Week Loan and Leisure Reading books borrowed or renewed can be kept over the Christmas vacation.

1st & 2nd Year Undergraduate loans will then be due back on Wednesday 10th January.

Finalist & Postgraduate loans will be due back on Friday 12th January.

Book recalls will also be suspended from Friday 8th December, resuming again on 5th January, meaning as usual we will NOT be recalling books over the Christmas vacation, though please note that any books requested & borrowed from our Hold shelves with outstanding requests on them will still only issue for one week.

Busy Start of Term!

Well! Didn’t we have a busy time of it yesterday! Even by usual first-day-of-term standards we were inundated with newcomers and returners alike who all, hopefully, found what they were looking for!

Some stat facts for all you numbers fans (and who isn’t?)

  • 2295 enquiries at our information desks (up 12% on last year’s figures)
  • 2762 people through the doors (including those who didn’t remember their ID cards, ahem!)
  • 1872 books issued (don’t worry, we’ve still got another 698,000 to go!)
  • 60 eager beavers for our Library Induction tours (still running 11-3 daily folks!)

If you’ve yet to catch up with us, don’t worry – there’s still plenty of time, and loads of information can be found on our all-new Welcome to the Library page.

Borrowing Books Over the Summer Vacation

As Summer term hurtles towards a rather soggy ending, those of you who are already looking forward to coming back in September/October may be starting to think of stocking up for the vacation. You’ll then be delighted to hear that next week we’ll be rolling out our Summer Vacation loan period, which will be as follows:

  • All Ordinary and Week Loan books now borrowed by current First and Second Year Undergraduates will be issued with the return date of 4th October.
  • All Ordinary and Week Loan books borrowed by Postgraduate students will be issued with the return date of 6th October.
  • All Ordinary and Week Loan books borrowed by Staff & Researchers will be issued with the return date of 29th September.
  • Current Finalists – those completing their studies this term – who still wish to borrow books should note that their books will be issued only until 21st June  – and don’t forget to clear your Library account with us before you go!

Maximum numbers of book loans remain the same for all users during the vacation (details available here).

High Demand books retain their status throughout the vacation and are not included in the vacation loan extension.

All Leisure Reading books will be issued until 6th October.

Please note that ALL books are subject to recall during the Summer Vacation if requested by another user, so if you borrow books for the holiday please keep an eye on your Loughborough student email account as that is where we will be sending the reminder to. Fines will accrue if recalled books are not returned – don’t come back to a nasty surprise!

Don’t forget that we’re still open during the summer even when you’re not here, so if you need to pop in or contact us, you can find a list of our vacation opening hours on the Library homepage.

Enjoy your summer – let’s hope the sunshine comes back!
