Help Us Celebrate World Book Night on Thursday

IMG_1782

If you’re in the Library this Thursday lunchtime, why not stop by our stand in the Library foyer and help us celebrate World Book Night by grabbing yourself a FREE book and a delicious piece of home-made cake.

We’ll be giving away copies of three novels (you can find out which on the day) along with a selection of cakes and snacks. In previous years (including last year, pictured above) the books and cakes have disappeared in super quick-time, so it really is a case of first come, first served – pop along early to avoid missing out on a treat.

World Book Night is an annual celebration of reading and books that takes place on 23rd April (we delayed our celebration for a week until you were all back from your Easter holidays!). It sees passionate volunteers give out hundreds of thousands of books in their communities to share their love of reading with people who don’t read regularly or own books. World Book Night is run by The Reading Agency, a national charity that inspires people to become confident and enthusiastic readers to help give them an equal chance in life.

World Book Night 2015

wbnToday marks World Book Night, the annual celebration of books and reading. And if you’re wondering why the Library isn’t marking the occasion… well, we are, but we’ve simply decided to postpone the event until next week, once term has started and everyone is back to help us celebrate it!

So you are hereby formally invited to join us in the Library foyer on Thursday 30th April between 12.30 and 2.30pm. Drop by and pick up a free novel, take a look at our Leisure Reading display and, most important of all, sample our delicious refreshments! It will be first come, first served, so get here early!

Every 23rd April volunteers give out hundreds of thousands of books in their communities to share their love of reading with people who don’t read regularly or own books. The Library is always proud to participate in the event, as previous blog entries show!

Or are reading regularly but would like to push yourself a bit more? The Six Book Challenge invites you to read 6 books or other texts within 6 months.

This is an initiative by the Reading Agency. It has already run successfully at many workplaces. We are running the Six Book Challenge at Loughborough University this year.

  • Sign up for the challenge
  • Receive your reading diary
  • Meet others taking part
  • Find out more!

The event will be launched by Vice Chancellor Bob Allison.

Refreshments will be provided.

If you have any good quality paperback novels you would like to donate to the BookCrossing scheme, please bring them along.

All welcome!  Please contact Marion Jost for more information.

Join Us for a World Book Night Celebration on Thursday

world book nightTo mark the start of term we’re celebrating World Book Night (a little later than advertised, granted!) with a FREE book (and cake!) giveaway in the Library foyer this Thursday lunchtime between 12.30 – 2.30pm (or whenever we run out of books and cake!)

We’ll be giving away copies of five books & novels (we’ll leave their identities as a surprise until the day!) along with a selection of home-made cakes and snacks. Judging from the popularity of the displays we’ve run previously the books and cakes may go like… well, hot cakes (!), so you may want to pop along early to avoid missing out on a real treat. See you there!

Bag a Book at the Laundrette!

BC5If you’re stuck for something to do while your laundry is churning away at the Campus Laundrette near the EHB, why not help yourself to something from the BookCrossing basket we’ve recently set up there?

You may already have seen our baskets of books at the Village Bar, the Martin Hall Bistro, the Student Hub and the ‘S’ Building. This basket replaces the one we used to have in the Fuel Box in the EHB. Just look for the books with the friendly yellow sticker above!

BookCrossing is the leisure reading phenomenon with the aim of encouraging us all to read more for pleasure. Designed as a ‘read me then release’ me scheme, the way it works is that you take any book you fancy, then, once you’ve finished reading it, pass it on for someone else to enjoy. To add to the fun, every book has been given its own ID number, so you can track its journey via the website.

However, to keep the scheme rolling we do need a constant supply of books to keep the baskets topped up! So, if you have any leisure reading books you’re happy to donate to the scheme, we’d really like to have them. Ideally we’d like good quality novels and biographies, autobiographies or memoirs. Please bring them to one of the Library desks, mentioning that they’re for the BookCrossing scheme, and we’ll do the rest!

Our Tree Runneth Over!

The University Mental Health & Wellbeing Day a couple of weeks ago was, by all accounts, a rampant success, and our own little stand down at the SU Building, to promote the joys of our Leisure Reading collection and its own section of mood-boosting books and ‘Books On Prescription’, went down really well – as you can tell from the number of suggestions we had stuck on our very own Mood-Boosting Tree above!

We asked you to name the book or novel that has done the most to lift your spirits or boost your mood, and to write down why and then stick it on the tree. Well, we were overwhelmed with fantastic entries (just compare & contrast the image above with the image we took here before we took the tree down to the SU!) and we’re now happy to announce that the winner of our £25 Amazon Kindle voucher was Katie Burns from English and Drama, who was inspired while growing up by The Illustrated Mum by Jacqueline Wilson. Well done Katie!

We haven’t forgotten about the other entries, though, as we’ll be checking through them all to see which of these inspirational works we currently don’t hold in stock, and look to purchase them for addition to our collection. So a big THANK YOU for everyone who helped inspire us – we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did!

Book Crossing Hits the Hub!

Regular visitors to three of the University’s food outlets – the Village Bar, the Fuel Box at the EHB and the Martin Hall Bistro will probably have noticed one of our BookCrossing wicker boxes full of donated novels (and hopefully you will have helped yourself from one too!). We’re pleased to say that we’ve now expanded our reach to include the Student Hub in the Student Village – you can find the box at the reception desk (pictured above).
