Next week is Open Access Week, and to mark the occasion OpenAIRE are running a series of free-to-access webinars on the subject.

  • Tuesday, October 21 : Horizon 2020 Open Research Data Pilot by Sarah Jones (HATII, DCC) (in collaboration with FOSTER)
  • Wednesday, October 22 : Horizon 2020 Open Access to Publications Mandate by Eloy Rodrigues (UMinho) (in collaboration with FOSTER)
  • Thursday, October 23 : Zenodo by Lars Holm Nielsen (CERN)

Now in its seventh year, Open Access Week promotes the availability of free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as required. Such freely available access to information is regarded as vitally necessary, having direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.

The Library has already taken positive steps towards Open Access through our Institutional Repository, which increases the visibility of Loughborough’s research while digitally preserving the University’s intellectual output.

Join Us for Elevenses this August

We’ll be looking at the following subjects:

The Library is running a series of workshops for staff this July with the aim of helping you get the best results for your research.

Open Access publishing: Policy and practice
Monday 14th July, 2-3.30pm
Open access is an increasingly important phenomenon in scholarly communication and is mandatory for a growing number of funding bodies. This session will bring attendees up to date with the latest developments in the open access debate, such as RCUK policy, as well as providing an overview of different open access publishing routes (both green and gold) available to researchers at Loughborough University.

Research data management
Tuesday 15th July, 2-4pm
Whilst efficient data management has always been part of good research practice, research data management is growing in importance in higher education. An increasing number of funding bodies require a data management plan to be submitted in a funding bid and the data produced to be shared, where possible. This session examines the importance of managing your data effectively and how to express this in a data management plan. It will also consider the issues of sharing and archiving data and how you can do this to meet funder requirements, as well as your own research needs.

Measuring your academic impact: Citations and other metrics
Wednesday 16th July, 10am-12pm
Research active staff are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate the impact of their research – whether for promotion, PRPs, funding applications, or research assessment. One way of assessing this type of impact of your research is through citation analysis, or bibliometrics. The Library provides access to a widening range of tools that facilitate this. This session will demystify the topic, so that you can see how metrics apply to your subject area and how you can use them to your advantage.

Increasing the visibility of your research
Thursday 17th July, 10am-12pm
Whilst you pride yourself on producing high quality research, are your research outcomes reaching the widest possible audience? Demonstrating the impact of your research is increasingly important for receiving funding, but to create an impact, it must first of all be noticed. This session will examine the various tools and services that are available to help you raise the visibility of your research outcomes, as well as discussing the benefits and challenges of this approach. The session will enable you to identify the most appropriate strategy for your own subject area.

Finding Research Information
Thursday 17th July, 2-4pm
This session keeps staff up-to-date with the range of information sources and services provided by Loughborough University Library that are available from their desktops and from mobile devices. It will enable them to refresh and refine their information finding skills, as well as identifying sources to help them keep aware of the developments in their research field.

Reference Management Software Survey for Staff & Researchers


Do you use RefWorks, Mendeley or EndNote? The Library is interested in hearing your views in a short survey.

Reference management software has gone through some rapid changes and to keep up with the latest developments the Library is reviewing the way we support the academic community with its provision of reference management software.

New HEFCE Policy on Open Access Announced

HEFCE and the other three UK funding bodies have just published details of a new policy for Open Access relating to future research assessments after the current 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The policy states that, to be eligible for submission to the post-2014 REF, authors’ final peer-reviewed manuscripts must have been deposited in an institutional or subject repository on acceptance for publication. Deposited material should be discoverable, and free to read and download, for anyone with an internet connection.

The requirement applies only to journal articles and conference proceedings with an International Standard Serial Number. It will not apply to monographs, book chapters, other long-form publications, working papers, creative or practice-based research outputs, or data. This new policy applies to research outputs accepted for publication after 1 April 2016.

Researcher Development Week, 31st March – 4th April

We’re staging a workshop a day every day next week under the banner of ‘Researcher Development Week’, on a range of topics that are likely to be of great interest to Academic staff and Research Associates.

On Monday 31st March take some time out of the office to refresh and refine your searching skills with expert help on hand with a session on Finding Research Information for Academic Staff and Research Associates (2-4pm, Library Seminar Room 1).

Need to know your h-index or find the impact factor of a journal?  Have these topics demystified with our course about Measuring your academic impact: Citations and other metrics on Tuesday 1st April. (2-4pm, Library Seminar Room 1).

On Wednesday 2nd April, come in to learn how to make your research outputs more visible with Increasing the Visibility of your Research for Academic and Research Staff (10am-12pm, Library Seminar Room 2).

Impact Festival 2014

If you’re a researcher and are looking for a way to maximise the impact of your research, why not come along to the Impact Festival being held at the Stewart Mason Building between Monday 13th-Friday 17th January?

This week-long programme will support you to demonstrate and maximise impact from your research, and will celebrate and share the range of exciting best practice already developed by academic colleagues, research students and a range of funders. Events include:

  • Presentations from funding bodies including the Research Councils, outlining priority areas and new funding calls, together with highlights from recent awards
  • 1:1 funding proposal guidance from funding body representatives, including Research Councils, TSB, UKRO, and Wellcome Trust
  • Best practice workshops on speaking with the media, pitching to panels and public engagement
  • Showcase of Loughborough University impact initiatives from across campus
  • Surgery sessions delivered by the Intellectual Property team and Glendonbrook Centre for Enterprise Education
  • Impact Festival debates and forums running throughout the week

Doctoral Open Days at the British Library

blThe British Library is running Doctoral Open Days series for this academic year and booking is now open for events taking place in 2014. These events introduce new PhD students to the British Library’s unique research materials and provide orientation regarding broader information environment for their subject.

The British Library is a hub for research, with vast and varied collections, expert staff and a wide range of events. Students can learn about their collections, find out how to access them, and meet their expert staff along with other researchers in their field.

These events are aimed at PhD students who are new to the British Library. The following events are now open to book:

  • 13 January – Environmental Science
  • 17 January – Digital Research
  • 20 January – History 1
  • 31 January – History 2
  • 3 February – English 1
  • 14 February – English 2
  • 24 February – Media, Cultural Studies and Journalism

All events take place in the British Library Conference Centre, London and cost £5. Lunch and refreshments are provided. It is recommended that to make the most of the day attendees get a free Reader Pass before the event. A small number of £20 travel bursaries are available for each event to students coming from outside Greater London.

British Library Newspaper Collection On the Move

During 2013-14 the British Library is moving the national newspaper collection from its current home in Colindale, North London, to a purpose-built Newspaper Storage Building (NSB) in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire.

As such all Print newspapers and microfilm will be embargoed from Friday 8th November 2013, at which point the Reading Room at Colindale will close. Periodical titles remain under embargo, except for a small number of high-use titles which will remain available until the Reading Room at Colindale closes.

Future access to the collection will be via a dedicated newspaper Reading Room at the Library’s main site at St Pancras, where microfilm and digital copies will satisfy the majority of requests. Where no ‘surrogate’ copy exists, it will be possible to request the print originals from Boston Spa; if the required item is in good enough condition to travel, it will be delivered to St Pancras within 48 hours.

The moves are part of a wider programme that aims to safeguard the long-term future of the collection, which includes more than 750 million pages of local, regional and national newspapers, along with periodicals covering every aspect of life in the UK and beyond.

In the mean time, the British Library’s British Newspaper Archive website, which offers free-to-search access to up to 4 million fully searchable pages, featuring more than 200 newspaper titles from every part of the UK and Ireland, remains fully available, while our Library has access to a wealth of newspaper resources online, most notably Nexis UK, as well as the electronic archives of individual papers such as the Guardian & Observer, The Times & Sunday Times, and the Daily Mail Archive, all accessible through Library Catalogue Plus.
