Eden Flix Presents… No Impact Man

logoNext Wednesday (27th May) at 3pm the Cope Auditorium will be showing No Impact Man, the latest in the Eden Flix series of socially themed contemporary documentaries.

In November 2006, author Colin Beavan, his wife, Michelle Conlin and their two year-old daughter, Isabella began the No Impact Man project. The goal: to make as little environmental impact as possible while living on lower 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

Before the project began, Colin and his family were SUV driving, fast food eating New Yorkers who would assuage their guilt with some good old American retail therapy. But Colin grew weary of his political convictions not lining up with his personal habits. So, in order to “walk the talk,” he decided for his next book to embrace a carbon-free, environmental friendly lifestyle and call himself “No Impact Man.” For starters, that would mean no trash, no electricity, no cars, no TV, and no buying anything new for an entire year.

The documentary feature film, No Impact Man, by Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein, presents an intimate emotional portrait of a couple struggling through a severe and protracted change in their way of life. Over the course of one year, the filmmakers documented what happens to Colin and Michelle’s emotional life as they alter their entire lifestyle. How do they cope with the constant stress and intermittent crises of such a rigorous way of living? Or, perhaps, when life is pared down, do some things become unexpectedly better and even easier?

Eden Flix Presents… 911

logoThe Eden Flix series of free environmentally-themed documentary films gets term off to a controversial start next Wednesday (29th April).

911: Explosive Evidence – Experts Speak Out presents persuasive viewpoints of over 1,700 architects and engineers who believe the unsettling theory that scientific forensic evidence points to explosive controlled demolition of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers on September 11, 2001.

The film is being shown in the Design Studio at the Keith Green Building at 3pm on Wednesday 29th April. The showing is free, but booking is necessary – simply visit the link below.

Eden Flix Presents… The Yes Men Fix the World

logoAnother in the free series of Eden Flix environmentally-themed films is being shown at the Design Studio this Wednesday (4th March).

The Yes Men Fix the World is a screwball true story that follows a couple of gonzo political activists as they infiltrate the world of big business and pull off outrageous pranks that highlight the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. Along the way the duo discover the culprits behind the cult of greed, and in a wildly uplifting ending, they find a way for everyone to defeat the cult and save civilization from its own worst excesses.

Eden Flix Presents… Gasland 2

The Cope Auditorium is the venue for the latest in the Eden Flix series of environmentally-themed films this Wednesday.

In this explosive follow-up to his Oscar®-nominated film GASLAND, filmmaker Josh Fox uses his trademark dark humor to take a deeper, broader look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil, now occurring on a global level (in 32 countries worldwide).

GASLAND PART II, which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing our nation today. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth’s climate with the potent greenhouse gas, methane. In addition the film looks at how the powerful oil and gas industries are in Fox’s words “contaminating our democracy”.

Eden Flix Presents… Four Horsemen

Next Wednesday, 18th February at 3pm the Design Studio in the Keith Green Building will be hosting another hard-hitting social documentary as part of the Eden Flix series.

Four Horsemen is the debut feature from director Ross Ashcroft which reveals the fundamental flaws in the economic system which has brought our civilization to the brink of disaster.

The film pulls no punches in describing the consequences of continued inaction – but its message is one of hope. If more people can equip themselves with a better understanding of how the world really works, then the systems and structures that condemn billions to poverty or chronic insecurity can at last be overturned. Solutions to the multiple crises facing humanity have never been more urgent, but equally, the conditions for change have never been more favourable

Eden Flix are a series of highly acclaimed, thought-provoking and inspirational documentaries on issues related to engineering, design and social consciousness sponsored by the Centre for Engineering and Design Education (CEDE) as part of the Engineering and Design Educators Network (EDEN) series of events.

Eden Flix Presents 'GasLand'

The Eden Flix series of thought-provoking documentaries on an environmental theme begins again for the 2013-14 academic year with a screening of the Academy Award nominated 2010 film GasLand, introduced by Dr. Diganta Das, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering, at 3pm on Wednesday, 20th November, at the Cope Auditorium.

With the concept of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, becoming increasingly considered as a key source of fuel for the UK, strong opinions supporting and opposing the process are fervidly arising amongst scientists, corporations and environmental activists causing widespread confusion among the population. Concerns speculate that fracking could cause carcinogenic pollution to water and earth tremors and they also elaborate that the shale gas extracted is ultimately, not a long-term nor sustainable option. The reality is that sufficient evidence hasn’t yet been produced to make calculated decisions, despite the seemingly convincing cases made by both sides – exemplified by Josh Fox’s work in GasLand.

Dr. Diganta Das will introduce this screening and open the floor for discussion afterwards. The screening will commence at 3pm and is free for all students and staff to attend, although booking is required as space is limited. You can do this via this link.

Planeat for Free at Eden Flix

Planeat_(film)Eden Flix presents the latest in their series of free environmental film showings tomorrow afternoon with a screening of the award-winning 2010 documentary Planeat.

Against a backdrop of colourful and delicious food grown by organic farmers and prepared in the kitchens of world-famous chefs, Planeat for the first time brings together the ground-breaking studies of three prominent scientists who have  between them explored the link between diet and disease, the use of nutrition to treat chronically ill heart disease patients, and how our food choices contribute to global warming, wasteful land use and lifeless oceans.

Free Eden Flix Screening of 'A Crude Awakening'

crudeNext Wednesday (1st May) Dr. Andrew Watson from Loughborough’s Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering will introduce Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack’s hard-hitting documentary A Crude Awakening that delivers a grave warning about the oil industry. Andrew will also host a Q&A session afterwards.

Eden Flix are a series of highly acclaimed, thought-provoking and inspirational documentaries on issues related to engineering, design and social consciousness.
