Inspired by Geometry Exhibition

A new exhibition with a mathematical twist starts day in the Martin Hall Exhibition Space.

Inspired by Geometry traces the unifying thread of geometric influence that binds together art, design, and mathematics. The exhibtion features original works by artists Jonathan Meuli and Karen Westland, together with mathematical sculptures created in a collaboration between the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Loughborough Design School.

The exhibition is supported by the Loughborough University Institute of Advanced Studies and the Loughborough Design School. It runs from 14th-31st January and  is open daily from 12pm-2pm. Admittance is free.

Co-Lab Artist Led Workshops, 28th January – 1st February

Radar, Loughborough University’s in-house arts initiative, presents a week of artist-led workshops exploring process of working that cross disciplinary and methodological boundaries. 

Co-Lab is a week of workshops organised by Radar to explore a range of contemporary issues. They’re led by leading artists who work across disciplines and are designed to provide insights into different ways of creatively approaching a range of topics: from architecture for the social good to poetry to ceramics to coding. You’ll learn new skills, meet people from a range of backgrounds and be encouraged to think about problems differently.

Co-Lab is open to all Loughborough University students, regardless of their artistic skill or experience. Sessions are free. There’s a £3 deposit per session, which is refunded after you attend. There’ll be a trip at the end of the week which may require a larger deposit.

Exam blues getting you down already? Then why not treat yourself to a FREE stressbusting massage from the University’s very own Physiotherapy Clinic – right here in the Library!

Up until the end of January trained masseurs will be based in Meeting Room 1 on Level 3 of the Library and available Monday to Friday from between 11am-1pm and 3-5pm – just sign up for a ten minute slot on the booking form on the Level 3 Enquiry Desk.

‘Reading Ahead’ Launch – Book Reading Event

The Student Union will be visited by an acclaimed literary guest at the launch of a new reading initiative next week in the form of alternate history, fantasy and contemporary crime author Rob Duncan, whose novels have been shortlisted for the Philip K. Dick Award, the East Midlands Book Award and the John Creasey Dagger of the Crime Writers’ Association. 

Rob will be reading an excerpt from his brand new novel The Outlaw and the Upstart King followed up with an exclusive interview and Q&A conducted by Loughborough University academic Deirdre O’Byrne.

Reading Ahead is an initiative spearheaded by the Reading Agency which is run in different workplaces by UNISON. The launch event will be a chance to browse their book selection, receive a complementary reading diary and meet other people from the challenge, plus the chance to enter a prize draw. There will also be literary-themed activities, a mystery book raffle and refreshments will be available.

The launch commences at 12pm on Wednesday 9th January in Cognito at the Student Union. Rob will be presenting between 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

LU Arts New Year Creative Writing Course

LU Arts Creative Writing evening class is back again in 2019 for another series, which is designed to hone your creative writing skills in any form. During this 10 week course, you will learn how to develop characters, utilize senses, create dialogue that will develop character and so much more. Their experienced tutor will focus on fiction but will be able to adjust course content to cover your particular writing needs!

“I loved the creative writing classes, particularly the variety of exercises and the balance between being encouraged to read work out and there not being any pressure to do so. Marianne was very encouraging and created a laid-back, inclusive atmosphere. The exercises she suggested helped me to think about my writing in different ways – the ‘crusty mustard’(!) exercise was especially useful in helping me to stop procrastinating and start writing something I could work with.” – Class Attendee (2018)

Free Times Newspaper Subscription for all Loughborough Students

Loughborough University is partnering with The Times and Sunday Times to offer all students a complimentary subscription to the newspaper’s digital content.

For the next 12 months, students will have digital access to The Times website and its smartphone and tablet apps.

The newspaper will also be hosting a series of exclusive events over the next year featuring its journalists and key political figures.

Hall Arts Takeover 26th-30th November

LU Arts has an exciting jam-packed week of FREE creative activities for you to get stuck in to!

From the 26th–30th November, all halls on and off campus will have the opportunity to bring their creative flair and inspire their inner artist. With a wide variety of performances and workshops lined up over the course of a week, there is something for everyone to get involved with!

All workshops will be open to students from all halls and will feature in places such as common rooms and dining rooms, although you will need to book first in order to attend. Essential Email and Groupware Maintenance, 27th November

Working with Microsoft, IT Services will be carrying out some essential maintenance work on part of our email infrastructure in order to maintain a resilient and supported email and groupware system. This work has the potential to be disruptive so IT Services have discussed and agreed the timing of this work with stakeholders and colleagues around the University. The work will take place on 27th November 2018 from 08:30-10:00am.

From 8:30am email sent to staff and students from outside of the University will be queued in order to prevent loss of email.  From this point you will not receive email from outside the University, nor email that is sent to email aliases and lists email addresses e.g. @lists.lboro.ac.uk, @dept.lboro.ac.uk until the work is complete.

Email within Office 365 i.e. between staff and students plus some types of groups, will continue to work as normal.

All other email to and from external recipients, including certain types of University mailing list and corporate applications, will be queued and delivered once the work is complete.

It is planned for work to be complete by 10:00am.  Further communication will be sent if the work extends beyond this and into the agreed 2 day ‘at risk’ window.

Once complete the work will provide us with a more reliable supported email and Groupware infrastructure for staff and students.
