Edited by Dr Bethany Woollacott.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog post, Iro and Tim discuss financial literacy for children as young as four years old. Based on a large-scale validation of a comic-strip-based assessment called <strong>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/strong>, this post outlines how researchers tested the tool\u2019s reliability and scalability (link to project page at the end of this blogpost). You might get a surprising answer such as \u201cFrom the card machine\u201d or \u201cYou just tap your watch!\u201d. These responses may seem amusing, but they reveal something deeper: children are absorbing ideas about money earlier than we might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until recently, we lacked reliable ways to measure what young children actually know and understand about money and finance. Without such tools, it is difficult to design or evaluate financial literacy programmes aimed at the early years. This blog post explores our journey to fill that gap, using a story-based tool called \u201c<em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em>\u201d to assess the financial literacy of children as young as four. You can download Arlo&#8217;s adventures, a user guide and the research behind it <a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/6fbqd\/overview\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/6fbqd\/overview\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why was this research needed<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial literacy plays a crucial role in lifelong well-being; however, research suggests that adults have consistently low levels of financial literacy, both in the UK and worldwide<sup>1<\/sup>. Research also tells us that early experiences, i.e., how and when children begin to think about money, are foundational to financial habits formed later in life<sup>2,3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, before <em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em>, there was no validated method to assess financial literacy in children under six. This left a critical gap in our ability to design and evaluate programmes aimed at enhancing the early development of financial skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Testing the efficacy of Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em> tells the story of an alien, Arlo, who crash-lands on Earth and must earn, save, and spend money to repair their spaceship<sup>4<\/sup>. The story unfolds through comic strips, which interviewers use as prompts to ask children specific questions about their knowledge and personal experiences with money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children are asked questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhere does money come from?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHave you ever saved money for something?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHave you seen someone pay with a phone or watch?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this project, we wanted to test whether <em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em> validly assesses young children\u2019s financial literacy and if it could reliably be used at scale. To achieve this, we administered Arlo\u2019s adventures to 382 children across the UK, from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. We also assessed their numeracy skills to understand the relationship between numeracy and financial literacy skills in the early years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Presenting the Key Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our results revealed that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>There was large variation in children\u2019s financial literacy scores within each age group<\/strong>, pointing towards the potential for developing appropriate activities and interventions that could help narrow these early gaps and support all children in building strong financial foundations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It\u2019s feasible to assess financial literacy in 4\u20136-year-olds through engaging interviews.<\/strong> In-person, one-on-one interviews using the Arlo comic format were highly successful, with strong inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.959) indicating consistency in how children\u2019s answers were scored.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Numeracy matters &#8211; but it\u2019s not the whole story.<\/strong> Children\u2019s numeracy skills explained about 31% of the variation in financial literacy scores, showing that while the two are related, they are not the same construct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, when analysing children\u2019s responses to <em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures\u2019<\/em> questions, we identified a five-factor model of early financial literacy. In other words, we found that children\u2019s responses grouped into five distinct key aspects of financial literacy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Transaction Methods<\/strong> \u2013 Knowledge about paying with cash, cards, or digital devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Getting and Using Money<\/strong> \u2013 Experiences of earning or deciding how to use money.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Saving<\/strong> \u2013 Understanding the idea of saving and safe places to store money.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Where Money Comes From<\/strong> \u2013 Understanding that money comes from jobs or allowances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spending<\/strong> \u2013 Making decisions about whether and how to spend money.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Children\u2019s understanding was spread across these factors and varied by age, with older children demonstrating better financial literacy skills. Tools like <em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em> can help teachers and researchers evaluate how and when financial understanding begins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Numeracy helps, but financial literacy is its own skill.<\/strong> While numerical skills play an important role, children\u2019s financial literacy also depends on other factors. This means that financial literacy should be addressed explicitly and not be assumed as merely a by-product of mathematics learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Parents need better tools and guidance.<\/strong> Since parents often misjudge their children\u2019s financial knowledge and understanding, interventions aimed solely at children may fall short. Resources that help parents understand, model, and talk about money more effectively could increase impact.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Arlo\u2019s Adventures<\/em> is more than just a story about a stranded alien &#8211; it\u2019s a new way of understanding how financial literacy begins. Our findings show that even very young children can think critically about money, and that it\u2019s both possible and important to assess these skills early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In schools and homes, early financial literacy needs more attention.
