The day-long event showcased some of the cutting-edge research being carried out at Loughborough in Communication and Media; Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy; English; and Sports Technology; as well as by a number of leading scholars from other UK universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-1-755x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-1-755x560.png 755w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-1-300x222.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-1-768x569.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-1.png 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium\u2019s topic of \u2018Care\u2019 proved a generative concept that facilitated critical dialogues between scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Over the day, around thirty attendees joined the event in the university\u2019s Hazlerigg Council Chamber, with over forty also attending online from across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, scholarship across a wide range of disciplines has seen a \u2018turn to care\u2019 (Aust 2021), with an increasing recognition of the intrinsic interdependence and shared-yet-unequal vulnerabilities of all human and non-human life. As speakers at the symposium recognised, we are living through a \u2018crisis in care\u2019, in which the material and affective capacities to reproduce and sustain life are under intensifying pressure. &nbsp;This event thus sought to showcase leading academic voices whose research investigates \u2018care\u2019 in all its many and diverse dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day was opened by Professor James Stanyer, Director of the CRCC, as well as co-organiser Dr Jilly Kay. The event\u2019s keynote was delivered by Professor Jo Littler (Goldsmiths University), an internationally recognised expert on the politics of care. Professor Littler\u2019s keynote \u2018From care to carewashing\u2026.and back again\u2019 drew on some of her collaborative work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/en-gb\/blogs\/authors\/collective-the-care?srsltid=AfmBOopghQ_5mfmpYR1nsaEQIDFKaMsrB1KYCA20m4T30ycsptMQ9GLG\">The Care Collective<\/a>, as well as her reflections on the \u2018carewashing\u2019 branding strategies of contemporary universities, which have since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00131857.2024.2396445?src=\">published in the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-2-755x563.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-2-755x563.png 755w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-2-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-2-768x573.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-2.png 1032w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The day proceeded with three themed panels on the topics of \u2018Care and technology\u2019, \u2018Care and the media and cultural industries\u2019, and \u2018Health, wellbeing and social care\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel on technology included papers by&nbsp; Dr Kristina Saunders (University of Glasgow): \u2018(Self) Care and reproductive justice: the role of online communities and health information as contraceptive care\u2019; Professor Massimiliano Zecca (Sports Technology Institute, Loughborough University): Frailty in Older Adults: How Robotics can Help to&nbsp; Improve Health and Function\u2019; and Dr Saul Albert (Communication and Media, Loughborough University): \u2018Improvisational care technologies: a case study of the assistance\/recruitment continuum in \u2018smart homecare\u2019 interactions\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel on the media and cultural industries featured papers by\u00a0 Dr Hannah Hamad (Cardiff University): \u2018Nurses and\/as Caring in Media Fictions of NHS Care Work\u2019; Dr Yuval Katz (Communication and Media, Loughborough University): \u2018Can we care about our enemies?\u2019; Dr Jade French (English, Loughborough University): \u2018Emotion, ageing, and the care home in post-war British novels since 1948\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"603\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-3-755x603.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-3-755x603.png 755w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-3-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-3-768x613.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Picture-3.png 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0The final panel on health, wellbeing, and social care included papers by\u00a0 Professor Alison Pilnick (Manchester Metropolitan University): \u2018Thinking (micro)sociologically about care\u2019; Dr Amy Cortvriend (Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, Loughborough University): \u2018Care of people seeking asylum in the UK\u2019; and Dr Catherine Coveny (Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, Loughborough University): \u2018Rhythms of care\u2019. The themed panels generated cross-disciplinary discussions between academic fields that are not usually in dialogue with one another.
