The project entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ostersjostiftelsen.se\/en\/project\/europes-new-iron-curtain-materiality-emotion-and-memory-in-the-eus-eastern-borderland\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ostersjostiftelsen.se\/en\/project\/europes-new-iron-curtain-materiality-emotion-and-memory-in-the-eus-eastern-borderland\/\">Europe\u2019s New Iron Curtain: Materiality, Emotion and Memory in the EU\u2019s Eastern Borderland<\/a>\u201d (\u00a3454,700; June 2026-May 2029) is funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies and conducted jointly together with Dr Florence Fr\u00f6hlig (PI, S\u00f6dernt\u00f6rn University) and Dr Zuzanna Bogumi\u0142 (Warsaw University).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project examines the emergence of a new Iron Curtain along the EU\u2019s eastern border, following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Being simultaneously the EU\u2019s external border and NATO\u2019s eastern flank, the borderlands of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland have become a strategically sensitive and volatile frontline zone. Programmes such as East Shield in Poland and the Baltic Defense Line in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia involve concrete measures to fortify the border through the construction of border fences, metal gates, anti-tank ditches, roadblocks and mined fields as well as investing in drone technology and increased surveillance in order to protect national security interests and defend countries against a possible Russian invasion. This project investigates this border transformation from the perspective of the borderland, shifting the focus away from the geopolitical centres towards the neglected, yet critical margins. It uses mobile and multi-sited ethnographic approach to investigate the changing materiality of the border and how borderland residents, who live in the border\u2019s immediate vicinity, respond to its fortification and securitisation. One key interest is in how collective memories, including histories of past violence, displacement but also past cross-border mobilities shape border practices and perceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first fieldwork trip was conducted this September and involved travelling along the border in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, conducting site visits to border crossings and border towns and villages including visits to museums and a border guard college. Her research focuses on cultural memory, heritage and identity in the transnational arena, focusing particularly on Russia and the former Soviet space. She is the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-031-83738-8\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-031-83738-8\">Tourism as Memory-Making: Russian Tourism in the Shadow of Empire<\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025), based on an ESRC New Investigator Grant project.
