{"id":537,"date":"2015-07-22T15:26:24","date_gmt":"2015-07-22T14:26:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/copyright.lboro.ac.uk\/general-election\/?p=537"},"modified":"2017-05-11T11:53:42","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T10:53:42","slug":"the-highs-and-lows-of-the-general-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/crcc\/general-election\/the-highs-and-lows-of-the-general-election\/","title":{"rendered":"The highs and lows of the 2015 General Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"General Election Research Hailed As &#039;Gold Standard&#039;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1phC-jW-4rc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Political strategists, journalists and academics gathered in Westminster this week for a Loughborough University conference focussing on the media coverage of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/general-election\/\">2015 General Election campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Held over two days on 13-14 July in London, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psa.ac.uk\/psa-communities\/specialist-groups\/elections-public-opinion-and-parties-epop\">Political Studies Association\u2019s Elections, Public Opinion and Parties<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(EPOP) Group Conference, organised in partnership with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos-mori.com\/\">Ipsos MORI<\/a>, offered a fascinating insight into the highs and lows of the election from those directly involved in the campaign and its media coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Guest speakers from political parties gave candid insights into how they fought the campaign and media perspectives were well represented by senior representatives from Ofcom, the BBC, ITV, The Evening Standard, Channel 4 News and Saatchi and Saatchi. The pollsters also came together to reflect on the lessons learned from this election.<\/p>\n<p>Professor of Communication and Media Analysis David Deacon and Professor of Political Communication Dominic Wring, both from Loughborough University\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/socialsciences\/research\/centres\/crc\/\">Communication Research Centre<\/a>, presented the findings of their<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/general-election\/\">news audit<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of the General Election campaign. The audit, which has been carried out by the Centre for every General Election since 1992, detailed what print and broadcast media coverage the parties, their policies, MPs, leaders and their partners secured in each week of the 2015 campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1phC-jW-4rc\">Speaking about the Conference<\/a>, Professor Wring said: \u201cIt was great to hear the various speakers offer their take on the General Election and answer questions from their peers, academics and members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Conference provided a unique opportunity for the key strategists to come together and share their experiences of the party campaigns from the inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor their part, the journalists told us how frustrating it was to deal with politicians determined to exert control over the news agenda by limiting the ability of reporters to ask the awkward questions they believed the public wanted answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in response to one of the major stories of the campaign, the shock result, the pollsters offered some reasons for why few had been able to forecast the surprise Conservative victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Crick, Political Correspondent for Channel 4 News, said: \u201cThe analysis of an election would be incomplete without a proper analysis of the media, and what\u2019s fascinating is to see how that changes over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin Moore, Director of the Media Standard Trust, said: \u201cThis work by Loughborough University around the election has been extremely important in providing a foundation for an awful lot of work that\u2019s done. There\u2019s clearly a huge amount of information now about elections, not just mainstream media information, but much broader, so having an anchor from Loughborough University is extremely helpful. The research quality has been high; it has been referenced in mainstream news outlets and we\u2019ve used some of the broadcast analysis for our own analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon Atkinson, Assistant Chief Executive at Ipsos MORI, added: \u201cLoughborough University has given us an historic comparative record and that\u2019s so important when we\u2019re studying General Elections because you\u2019ve got to be able to put it in to context.
