Project title: A device/system to monitor the welfare of sheep throughout their life, whilst also reducing the number of ewes and lambs that die during the later stages of pregnancy and early stages of birth.

Having grown up in the idyllic Cotswolds from a farming background and with a good knowledge of the subject area, a product/service aiding the sheep farming community was identified.

From the research stage there were two main items of information that played a crucial role in determining the direction of the project.

● Firstly is what I found to be the most astonishing, is that all the commercial sheep farmers interviewed don’t actually know how many sheep they own simply because of manual data entry, counting by eye, and paper records.

● Secondly is that from reviewing ‘Peripartum body temperatures in free-ranging ewes’(ovis aries) and their lambs’ research paper by Alida S. Faurie, Duncan Mitchell, Helen P. Laburn, it identified that when a ewe is going into labour her body temperature reduces by approximately 0.5 degrees C and then rapidly increases by almost 2 degrees.
