The Jamf Casper clients on lab Macs will automatically update.

The new Casper tools are now available at \\ws2.lboro.ac.uk\DesktopResource\MBiL\OSX_Tools\Casper_Utilities. Please copy these latest utilities to your development Mac in place of the previous versions.

If you have any issues, please contact the IT Service Desk or check back on the blog.

Verismic Power Manager Client Update in Labs

The Verismic Power Manager client will shortly be updated to the latest version. This is in order to resolve a bug which occasionally causes lab PCs to fail to shutdown automatically when they are due to.

The upgrade is being deployed on the following schedule:

  • Monday 15th December 2014 (3AM) – N006 and U007
  • Wednesday 17th December 2014 (3AM) – All ITS Labs
  • Tuesday 6th January 2015 (3AM) – All W7 Service Labs and updated in all Task Sequences.

The update takes ~30 seconds, is completely silent and does not require a reboot.

Please report any problems to the IT Service Desk.

Labs changing to Out of Term Power Policy on 12/12/14

Please be aware that at approximately 4 PM on Friday 12th December labs will be changed to the out of term power policy. This means lab PCs will shutdown after 30 minutes inactivity when not logged in at all times.

Labs which have a customised power policy applied will not be affected.

The term time power policy will be reinstated prior to the start of the Spring Term.

Internet Explorer 11 and Java 7 Update 55 to Windows 7 Service Staff PCs

Internet Explorer 11 and Java 7 Update 55 to Windows 7 Service Staff PCs

Upgrades to IE and Java

What is happening

Internet Explorer 11 and Java 7 Runtime Environment Update 55 are being rolled out to Windows 7 Service staff PCs. These updates are critical for both the security and functionality of the Windows 7 Service. During the installation, Internet Explorer 9 and Java 6 will be removed.  This will bring the staff service in line with the labs, which have been running these versions since the summer.

The updates have been thoroughly tested for compatibility with the University’s centrally supported corporate and student systems.

How will the works affect me?

The updates will be released as a combined deployment on the schedule below. The installation will take up to 15 minutes to install, followed by a reboot.  All web browsers should be closed whilst the upgrade is in progress.

Installation will initially be postponable. The installation will then become mandatory on the date given below.

Should the user decline the update, they will be prompted again the following day or the user can run it from Control Panel -> Run Advertised Programs. Please note that we are unable to include this deployment in Check For Updates.

Following the installation and reboot, the PCs may install software updates for IE11 once a routine software scan has completed.

Timescales

The deployment schedule will be as follows:

  • Monday 15th December 2014 – IT Services (postponable)
  • Wednesday 17th December 2014 – Academic Registry (postponable)
  • Monday 12th January 2015 – All Professional Services and External departments (postponable)
  • Monday 19th January 2015 – All Schools (postponable) and VDI services
  • Monday 2nd February 2015 – Mandatory to all W7 Service staff PCs and added to Core Task Sequence for W7 Service staff PCs

The update will also be available to install via Run Advertised Programs at all times.

Casper Suite unavailable due to maintenance Monday 15th December AM

Casper Suite unavailable due to Maintenance on Monday 15th December 9AM – 1PM

Upgrade to Casper Suite v9.62

What is happening

IT Services need to upgrade our current version of the Casper Suite to the latest version. The upgrade will add support for OSX Yosemite ahead of the beginning of the 2015 Labs project, as well as bug and security fixes.

How will the works affect me?

The Casper Suite will be unavailable whilst this work is carried out. It will therefore not be possible to image the Mac OS on Multi-Boot iMac Lab Macs or use the Self Service app on the MBiL Service. There may also be brief periods (<2 minutes) where users logging into the Mac OS may not get their personal workspace mapped automatically whilst the Casper server reboots.

The Windows 7 Service partition of MBiL computers will be unaffected by this maintenance.

Timescales

The Casper server will be unavailable from 09:00 on Monday 15th December. We anticipate the work to be completed by 13:00.
