Suggested Sites on the Windows 7 Service

We have noticed that every time a users logs into a different computer a new ‘Suggested Sites’ folder is created in ‘Favorites Bar’ of IE11. Since we do not display the ‘Favorites Bar’ on our Service, most users are unaware of this fact. This is a result of the interaction between ‘Suggested Sites’ and ‘Folder Redirection’. The simplest way to rectify issue this is to turn off the ‘Suggested Sites’ feature via Group Policy.

This change will be applied to the service on the following schedule.

19th August – IT Services: Staff and Labs
24th August – Support: Staff and Labs
26th August – All Staff and Labs

New Task Sequences Available for Macs

The following additional task sequences have been advertised:

  • A task sequence called “Windows 7 Service – 2015-16 Live for Macs” has been advertised to the “all known and unknown computers” collection.
  • A task sequence called “Windows 7 Service – 2015-16 Live Common for Macs” has been advertised to the All Labs collection.

These include fixes for the Windows deployments on Macs which occurred due to multiple partitions having different drive letters to expected.

There is no harm in using these for the PC’s and laptops but please try to run the correct one for ease of reporting.

Rollout of Sassafras K2

On Tuesday 8th September, we will begin rollout to the Staff Desktop Service of the Sassafras client.

This is required to allow the university to comply with licensing terms for some of our enterprise wide software.

HOW WILL THE WORKS AFFECT ME?
The installation will occur silently with no reboot required. The software has minimal overheads, so this addition shouldn’t affect the normal operation of machine.

TIMESCALE?
The staged rollout will occur between Tuesday 8th September and Monday 15th September. Any machine not switched on during this time will receive the software when next used. Sassafras is included in the latest staff image, so newly deployed machines will already have the package.

SCCM Maintenance

Please can all Lab Managers review and delete any images, backups and packages from SCCM. As all Labs need to be reimaged this year, any data from previous years should be removed. This maintenance is key to ensuring we have enough space for the 2015-2016 lab model.

  • Delete Source Backups from \\sccm-store\backup
  • Delete Source Wim Images from \\sccm-store\images
  • Delete Image packages from the SCCM Console.
  • Delete old custom Task Sequences from the SCCM Console.
  • Delete Source Applications \\sccm-dbase\apps\Windows_7\SAPS – 3rd party packaged app
  • Delete Application packages from SCCM Console.

The EUC Team advise deleting the packages and task sequences first, as the deletion wizard will find any advertisements and prompt for their deletion .
