Mathworks Matlab software

Mathworks Matlab software

IT Services are pleased to announce that after lengthy negotiations, an agreement has been reached to purchase a site license for Mathworks Matlab software. This brings the following immediate benefits:

  • The software is available for student installs (instructions via LEARN)
  • The removal of the need to register university machines against the license server
  • The removal of charging for the use of Matlab
  • Access via license server to the complete set of toolboxes

There is clearly work to do in putting together all of the requirements to take this forward, however, over time, we will be looking at:

  • How we provide cross-platform access for installation
  • Documenting staff installs onto their own machines
  • Documenting how network disconnected access can be provided
  • Looking at the feasibility of installation onto the HPC

VDI Service – urgent patching required

Windows 7 Service –Improving start-up times

Group policy change

IT Services will be applying a new group policy which will disable several unnecessary update services and set Keyserver to a delayed start. This has shown to improve start up times and shutdown issues on computers with standard hard drives (i.e. not SSD’s).

HOW WILL THE WORKS AFFECT ME?

The group policy is applied at start-up therefore on the first boot the start-up time may be slightly longer. If you were affected by slow start up times due to these services then the improvement will be noticeable on the next boot up.

TIMESCALE?

The group policies will be rolled out with the following schedule:

All Labs: Mon 2nd November

ITS Windows 7 staff PCs: Wednesday 28th October

AA-deptstaff Windows 7 staff PCs: Monday 2nd November

Support Staff Windows 7 staff PCs: Wednesday 4th November

All Windows 7 staff PCs: Monday 9th November

The change will be applied on the next start-up which in most cases will be the next day.

SCCM service at risk until testing is complete

The SCCM service is now available again following yesterday’s emergency patching of the underlying VMWare infrastructure. However, the service should be considered at risk while we test fixes related to issues reported by IT staff prior to yesterday’s downtime.

We will advise you when this testing has been successfully completed.
