Update to Java on Staff Service

Oracle have released a new version of Java to fix a critical vulnerability in Java 8.
Details of issue here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alert-cve-2016-0636-2949497.html. Hence, we are rolling out Java 8 Update 77 to the W7 Service.

We have completed the rollout of this version of Java to Student labs, it is now time to begin the rollout to Staff. Java 8 Update 8 has tested against Corporate Applications and no issue have been discovered.

The rollout Schedule is as follows:-

27th April – Postponable to ITS
29th April – Postponable to Support
3rd May   – Postponable to External
5th May   – Postponable to Schools 1
9th May   – Postponable to All W7 Staff
16th May – Mandatory to remaining systems.

UPDATE – Casper Suite unavailable Monday 18/04/16 for updates

Unfortunately the automated backup of the Casper server failed meaning we have had to take a fresh manual backup. This is underway but will take a couple of hours. As a result our original update schedule has had to be delayed until later today.

Please therefore consider the Casper Suite unavailable for the entire day, rather than just this morning. If you have any urgent need to use Casper today, please let us know.

Update to Java in Labs

We have started rolling out this version of Java to ITS labs. This process will be completed by Friday 22rd April. On the following Monday, 25th April, this version will be rolled out to School Labs. The installation is silent.

Java 8 Update 8 is current being tested against Corporate Applications prior to deployment to the Staff Service.  We will let you know details before this rollout begins.

Casper Suite unavailable Monday 18/04/16 for updates

The Casper Suite needs updating to v9.91 (the latest version). We plan to do this on Monday 18th April starting at 9AM, and anticipate it taking until approximately 1PM to carry out the required testing.

As the casper-dbase-pro server and JSS will be intermittently restarted during this process, all server elements of the Casper Suite should be considered unavailable between these times. This includes access to the JSS, Self Service, Casper Admin, Casper Remote and Netboot.

End users of the MBiL service will be unaffected, and the only impact on School of Science staff users will be the unavailability of Self Service.

To minimise downtime, we will also take this opportunity to install all outstanding security updates on the server.

If this date and time will cause a major inconvenience to you, please let us know ASAP.

Once the work is complete we will inform you of this and make the updated Casper Suite tools available on the DesktopResource workspace as usual.
