In July 2026, I had the honor and privilege to spend time as a Residential Fellow at the IAS House with the Institute of Advanced Studies at Loughborough University. Upon reflecting on this experience, I believe it is not only something that I now understand that I needed and benefited from professionally, but also one that I needed personally, and that my family enjoyed and benefited from greatly. It is difficult, in thinking and reflecting about the experience, to untangle the experience from professional, personal, and familial perspectives. But, perhaps this is unnecessary, as we (as humans) are not monolithic beings that sit neatly in different categories at times, but rather exist in ways that different identities are always acting. With that, the best way to describe this experience for me is holistically, as a month-long work experience that took our family and placed us in a new setting that allowed us to learn more about each other while we enjoyed time with our hosts, other IAS fellows, and others within the Loughborough community, while I simultaneously existed and learned professionally from the faculty and students at Loughborough within my field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In thinking about the visit, it is clear to me that the crux of the quality of our visit was the people whom we had the pleasure to interact with on a daily basis. This was all led by our host, Janine Coates, who did a masterful job of integrating me into the work community at Loughborough, as well as my family within the community she has built here. On campus and away from campus, we spent a month involved in conversations about new emerging technologies, potential funding opportunities, as well as current and future collaborations. Of course, these were incredibly fruitful conversations, which will surely continue. Beyond this, we spent time with our families learning from and getting to know one another, and these are the times that will made the Residential Fellowship memorable and remarkable for my family and I. We are very grateful to Janine and her family for this. All of these experiences were enhanced by the people throughout the Loughborough community, including many Loughborough faculty, doctoral scholars, and alumni. It seemed that each day, another person in our field was on or around campus and interested in talking about our field and research, as well as spending time with my family and I. I believe this speaks to the importance of the residential fellowship, where we had enough time to speak beyond work, and learn more about each other and our values. We were also joined by Dr. Maria Luiza Tanure Alves, from the University of Campinas (Brazil), whom has been a dear friend and colleague for many years, as another IAS Fellow for a week. This visit was not only wonderful for me, but also for my family who know Malu from a prior visit of hers to our university several years ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This experience was truly a family experience for me, where I was able to enjoy a long month abroad with my family while engaged with colleagues and their families while in and around Loughborough. The way in which the IAS House permits IAS to allow families to join is truly remarkable, and makes this experience both enjoyable and productive. With that, I cannot complete this reflection without thanking those who hosted me. First, the work done by those at IAS, including Connor, Kieran, Lynda, Yajie, Laura, and Ksenia, is truly remarkable. From the first emails and (several and varied) planning conversations with Connor, and through arrival with my family and throughout the month, the IAS could not have been more welcoming. Second, I feel truly indebted to Janine Coates and her family for hosting Jane, Casey, Emma, and I throughout the month. The experience we had extended beyond just academics, and built bonds that likely will result in lifelong friendships among our children. I cannot thank Janine enough for the time and effort she spent making our family feel \u2018at home\u2019 in Loughborough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
