{"id":345,"date":"2017-04-21T12:50:53","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T11:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/copyright.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/?p=345"},"modified":"2017-05-02T09:03:06","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T08:03:06","slug":"living-with-international-flatmates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/students\/living-with-international-flatmates\/","title":{"rendered":"Living with international flatmates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it was time for me to choose my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/campus-living\/accommodation\/halls\/\">accommodation<\/a>, there were several factors I considered \u2013 like proximity to my lecture buildings and library, the neighbourhood, security, comfort, and the hall fees<!--more--> \u2013 before eventually settling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/campus-living\/accommodation\/halls\/johnphillips\/\">John Phillips Hall<\/a>, which is the postgraduate-only hall on campus. Although JP Hall is the most expensive of all the options I had to choose from, I nonetheless opted for it because of its proximity to my lecture buildings, the library, Student\u2019s Union building and the Student\u2019s Service building, which are about my favourite places on campus.<\/p>\n<p>More so, all the rooms in JP have ensuite bathrooms, with a shared kitchen and dining area, which has become a space for, not just cooking and\/or dining, but, also, for conversing and learning. I share this space with five\u00a0international students \u2013 who I fondly refer to as my flatmates \u2013 and when our hungry bellies guide our footsteps to the kitchen, and we bump into one another, in the process of cooking and\/or dining, we converse and, ultimately, get to learn a thing or two about ourselves from these conversations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-346\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0000_Layer-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0000_Layer-1.png 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0000_Layer-1-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To be honest, prior to arriving at Loughborough, I was a bit concerned about who my flatmates would be. Generally, I get along well with people, but, for some reasons, I had mixed feelings about living with international students for a period of 50 weeks. I thought to myself \u201c50-weeks is too long to put up with nasty people\u201d, and some million-and-one thoughts ran through my mind: \u201cwhat if they are not friendly?\u201d, \u201cwhat if they don\u2019t like the smell of Nigerian food or I don\u2019t like the smell of their food?\u201d, \u201cwhat if they\u2019re dirty and would mess everywhere up?\u201d, \u201cwhat if they\u2019re not accommodating?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I still had all the \u201cwhat-ifs\u201d bugging my mind even up to some minutes before I eventually met my first-two flatmates \u2013 Silvia from Italy, and Ian from Kenya. They had the warmest of all smiles and friendliest of all aura that made me forget, in a flash, all the \u2018what-ifs\u2019 that had hitherto bugged my mind. Two days after, I met my third and fourth flatmates \u2013 Stephanie from India and Onyinyechi from Nigeria \u2013 and I thought to myself \u201cI need to give a big hug to whoever was responsible for the room allocations, for a job well-done.\u201d My last flatmate to arrive was Mark from England; although Mark is British, he&#8217;s \u2018technically\u2019 an international student too, in\u2019it? Haha.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-349\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/chidmina-kitchen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/chidmina-kitchen.png 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/chidmina-kitchen-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back to the kitchen gist \u2013 our kitchen holds a very significant value \u2013 it has helped to create a kind of bond among us that is somewhat inexplicable, albeit special. JP hall is a self-catered hall, which means that most of us visit our kitchen at least once a day to take care of our bellies. Some times, I am the only one in the kitchen, while most times I have at least one person with me, and a few other times, up to 5 of us are in the kitchen \u2013 these times are what I have tagged as our \u2018kitchen moments\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It is during our kitchen moments that we get to catch up with one another, and chat about almost anything ranging from food and weather to events and activities that are of interest to us. Without our kitchen moments, I probably wouldn\u2019t have known that Mark is a <a href=\"http:\/\/loughboroughsport.com\/sporting-pathways\/profile\/kung-fu\/\">Kung-fu<\/a> belt holder, Ian\u2019s grandmother is a renowned activist, Silvia\u2019s favourite food is pasta (because that\u2019s the only food I see her make, haha), Stephanie has had at least three years of work experience before coming to Loughborough, and Onyinyechi had just finished a master\u2019s programme before commencing another master\u2019s in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/chemical\/postgraduate\/\">Chemical Engineering<\/a> at Loughborough University. In fact, for Onyinyechi and I, our bond goes beyond the kitchen moments, we\u2019ve literally grown from total strangers to sisters; perhaps, coming from the same country also contributed to fastening the bond.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-348\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0003_L-R-Ian-Steph-Me-Sylvia-in-a-lift-heading-to-the-LSU-International-Showcase.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0003_L-R-Ian-Steph-Me-Sylvia-in-a-lift-heading-to-the-LSU-International-Showcase.png 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/04\/ChidminaApril_0003_L-R-Ian-Steph-Me-Sylvia-in-a-lift-heading-to-the-LSU-International-Showcase-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have lived with my flatmates for six months now but it feels like I&#8217;ve known them all my life. They have collectively contributed to my postgraduate experience at Loughborough University and, honestly, I couldn\u2019t have asked for better flatmates. They turned out to be the opposite answers to all the \u201cwhat if\u201d questions that initially bugged my mind \u2013 they are friendly, have never complained about the smell of my Nigerian foods, neither have I complained about theirs, and, the one I was most concerned about, they don\u2019t mess everywhere up. In fact, we have continually won gold stars from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/campus-living\/\">Campus Living<\/a>, which come with free vouchers redeemable for any of the products offered at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/campus-living\/food-drink\/outlets\/cafesandbars\/\">Village Bar and Restaurant<\/a>, for keeping our kitchen clean.
