Five minutes with: Dawn Matthews
What’s your job title and how long have you worked at Loughborough?
I have two roles – Strategic Planning Officer (VCO) and Professional Programmes Coordinator (Enhanced Academic Practice) – and I’ve been here 12 years.
Tell us what a typical day in your job looks like?
I get lots of variety across my two roles and have had even more variety over the last nine months, as part of a secondment to the Change team in Organisational Development. Because of the split nature of my roles, I get to work with lots of people from across the University, which is one of the best parts of my job. A typical day might involve delivering workshops to support academics and staff involved in teaching and learning with their professional development as part of my role in Enhanced Academic Practice. Or working with colleagues to develop and plan projects that support our strategic aims as part of my seconded role in the Change team.
What’s your favourite project you have worked on?
One of my favourite projects is one I am currently working on called Project Expectations. This project is all about connecting and engaging with people from across the University, working together to help everyone understand our purpose as a University and what we stand for in terms of our values. It’s a really exciting project that will help to create a culture that celebrates and recognises all the amazing things we do.
What is your proudest moment at Loughborough?
Working with colleagues across the University to pull together our submission for the Race Equality Charter. I was particularly focused on the teaching and learning aspect of this, working with people from schools to understand and identify opportunities to make our curricula more inclusive from the perspective of race. I was very proud when we received a bronze award for the Race Equality Charter and how the team I worked with supported this.
Tell us something you do outside of work that we might not know about?
I love sport and helping others to get active. I fulfill this passion through volunteering at my local football club as club secretary and more recently I have taken up coaching for my youngest son’s football team. I’m hoping to complete a coaching qualification in the spring and perhaps start to help out with the girls teams too. It’s lots of fun and I love getting outside, running around and helping young people get active.
What is your favourite quote?
‘Will it make the boat go faster?’ Ben Hunt-Davis, GB Mens Rowing Team.
