What’s your job title and how long have you been at Loughborough?

Since joining Loughborough University in February 2025, I have been privileged to serve as the University’s Muslim Chaplain.

Tell us what a typical day in your job looks like?

No two days are ever the same. My role is centred around pastoral care, supporting students and staff through both the highs and the challenges of university life. Whether I am having one-to-one conversations, facilitating faith-based activities, collaborating with colleagues across the University, or simply creating a safe and welcoming space, ensuring everyone feels seen, heard, valued and celebrated for who they are.

What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on?

My favourite project so far has been working with Professor Line Nyhagen on ‘Understanding and improving the lived experiences of Muslims at Loughborough University’. At a time when many minoritised communities are navigating complex challenges, it has been encouraging to see the University take a proactive approach in listening, learning and creating meaningful change. Through this initiative, Loughborough has joined a wider group of universities committed to improving the experiences of Muslim students and staff, working collaboratively to identify challenges, share learning and develop more inclusive practices. Being part of this work has been a privilege, as it reflects the importance of universities being torchbearers for positive change and creating environments where everyone feels they belong.

What is your proudest moment at Loughborough?

My proudest moments are often the quiet ones that happen behind the scenes. Seeing individuals who were once struggling leave feeling hopeful, confident, or simply knowing they have someone to turn to is what makes this role so meaningful. Knowing I have played even a small part in someone’s university journey is something I’m incredibly proud of.

Which University value do you most resonate with and why?

Creative and Collaborative resonate with me the most because meaningful support is rarely achieved in isolation.

Everyone’s journey is unique, so finding creative ways to engage, encourage and support them is an important part of my role. Whether that’s developing initiatives that foster belonging, creating welcoming spaces for conversation, or responding to individual needs, creativity helps ensure our approach is relevant and inclusive.

Collaboration is equally important. Working alongside colleagues, the Students’ Union, faith groups and Student Services enables us to provide holistic support and create a stronger sense of community. By bringing together different perspectives and expertise, we can have a greater impact and work towards supporting everyone throughout their time at Loughborough.

Tell us something you do outside of work that we might not know about?

Outside of work, I lead Markfield Maktab, an Islamic supplementary school for children aged 5–16, where our team is dedicated to nurturing young minds through faith-based education and personal development. I also enjoy watercolour painting, which gives me a creative space to unwind and reflect.

What is your favourite quote?

“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.” Prophet Muhammad.

This prophetic saying inspires me every day and reflects the heart of my work serving others with compassion, kindness and sincerity.
