Why you should volunteer at university

5 December 2018

Each year, thousands of students get involved in the diverse volunteering opportunities at Loughborough. There are countless projects to take part in, such as working with the elderly, coaching sport, or even volunteering overseas.

Action is the volunteering section of the Students’ Union. Last year, 1,600 students took on roles with Action, contributing to an incredible 20,500 hours of volunteering. We also have a Coaching and Volunteer Academy (CVA), which provides our students with sports-based volunteering opportunities; they racked up an impressive 48,720 hours last academic year!

With so many opportunities right on your doorstep, university is the perfect time to start volunteering. We spoke to some of our students to find out about their experiences.

Make a difference

Volunteering makes a real difference to the lives of others, and there are so many great causes you can get behind. Whether you wish to commit to a weekly project, or just want to help out every now and again, you will have a positive and meaningful impact on people and communities.

“I volunteer because it is such an amazing cause and you get to work alongside wonderful people while potentially saving people’s lives.” – Aron, Loughborough Marrow Chair

“I love taking part in projects and seeing the difference we make. We have a big impact on the community, and I think that’s something to be proud of!” – Pippa, Young Persons Officer

Develop your skills

Volunteering offers you the chance to broaden your experiences, develop your skills, and gain new knowledge. These experiences are invaluable and can benefit both your career and your everyday life.

“Gaining work experience can be difficult, but volunteering is a great way to get the skills and experiences employers look for. I have gained so much from volunteering, and the skills I have developed can be transferred to so many situations.” – Alex, Campus Nursery Volunteer

“Being involved in volunteering has helped with my social and communication skills, as I get to interact with a range of people and ages.” – Flora, Community Outreach Officer

Meet new people

Volunteering is highly sociable and can be a great way to meet new people. It’s an opportunity to get to know people away from your course, and meet people you wouldn’t have otherwise met.

“Volunteering within the Action section was one of my highlights of first and second year! The variety of projects meant that you would be able to meet new people each time.” – Sammie, A-Teams Volunteer

“I built friendships with an incredibly supportive group of people, and found my greatest friends.” – Jess, CVA Volunteer

Feel good

As well as doing good for others, volunteering can also improve your own well-being. It’s a great way to reduce stress, as well as giving you a sense of accomplishment.

“I always have such a good time while volunteering and I have never attended an event and not gone home feeling great afterwards.” – Aron, Loughborough Marrow Chair

“Alongside the hard work is a lot of fun and enjoyment, as well as a huge sense of achievement throughout” – Jess, CVA Volunteer
