Holocaust Memorial Week

27 – 31 Jan | Various timings and locations

Loughborough University will be holding a week of events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January).

The day is recognised across the world to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides across the world since.  

From 27-31 January, there will be a variety of educational lectures, workshops, testimonies, memorial services and day trips available to attend. All of the events are free of charge and are open to staff, students and members of the community.

Monday 27th January

Spring Festival 2020

12 – 2pm | Jennings Council Chamber, Hazlerigg Building

The University’s Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Staff Network is hosting the celebration with a lunch and two performances.

The event will be held in two sessions: 12pm-1pm and 1pm-2pm with performances of a traditional Chinese folk dance at 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

You can choose three options for the food menu:

  • Spring rolls (V)
  • Sweet and sour chicken
  • Beef in black bean sauce
  • Szechaun Spicy Chicken (辣子鸡) (smaller portion)
  • Mixed vegetable (V)

All are served with rice and there will be a bottle of water per person too.

There will also be a number of stalls in the Shirley Pearce Room including a Chinese Zodiac stand.

Happy Mondays: Create your own Japanese character stamp

7pm | Cognito, LSU

This session will introduce you to Japanese characters (alphabet equivalent) including how to read and pronounce them, and how to write your names.

The main aim is to make your own stamps with your initials, which you will take home with you at the end of session.

In addition, you will also learn lino cutting techniques that can be useful for making even more stamps by yourselves.

A £3 deposit per person must be paid at the time of booking. On completion of the workshop, this will receive the equivalent in loyalty points to spend on purchases in LSU. This deposit is non-refundable if you do not turn up on the day. Click here for more information.

Bullet Journaling Workshop

7 – 9pm | Common Hall, Claudia Parsons Hall

Support your health and well-being this term with a programme of free, fun and uplifting activities for you to try.

This is a workshop to aid students in finding a way to plan their time effectively and track progress. A necessity for a busy student life and timetable. Click here for more information.

Thursday 30th January

Talk Sport 2020

10:30am – 5:30pm | James France Building

A student conference for anyone interested in a career in the sports industry, which is open to students from all degree programmes and year groups. 

  • Listen to keynote presentations from the CEO of Youth Sport Trust, Ali Oliver
  • Attend careers focused workshops led by industry specialists such as Sport England, Sky Sports, Law in Sport, BBC Sport, Aston Villa, Leicester Tigers, British Showjumping and many more
  • Ask questions to leading figures in the sports industry at the Q&A panel
  • Take part in the Women in Leadership activities and be inspired by the females working at the top of their game
  • Attend the Finalist Mentoring session – more information to follow.

Start-Up Fund: Term 2

6:30 – 7:30pm | The Start-Up Lab 2.01 (Ideas Factory), STEMLab Building

A chance to hear about our Start-Up Fund, including how to apply, what we support, the terms and conditions and more!

Join your Student Enterprise Adviser, Dr Sophie-Louise Hyde, for the first of a series of Start-Up Fund Briefing sessions and reminders this year. Hear all about how you can apply for this funding to help kick-start your business or idea, find out more about the terms and conditions, check your eligible and meet the criteria, as well as understanding how Sophie can support you throughout the process. Refreshments are provided.

Friday 31st January

British Academy Funder visit

12 -2pm | Jennings Council Chamber, Hazlerigg Building

Dr Ken Emond, Head of Research Funding, Jessica Meese, International Programmes Manager and colleagues of The British Academy will be visiting Loughborough University. Dr Emond and colleagues will provide information for Loughborough staff on funding opportunities available with The British Academy.

As well as British Academy colleagues presenting information, we will also have presentations from two Loughborough academics who have received BA funding:

• Antonis Vradis – GCRF Citizen Infrastructure grant holder

• Saul Albert – GCRF Cities Infrastructure grant

This will be followed by a small number of opportunities for one-to-one sessions.

Elizabeth will be giving a talk 10am-11am at in 008, West Park Teaching Hub but there will also be an information stand around campus at the following times:

  • Edward Herbert Building, 12pm-2pm
  • Students’ Union, 2.30pm-3.30pm

Election 2019: The Brexit Campaign

10am – 6pm | Loughborough University London

This day conference will revisit and reconsider the 2019 election with analysis from practitioners and academics. It is the latest in a series of electoral post-postmortems, one of which has been held after every UK General Election since 1979.

Lightning Netball Tri-Tournament

Doors open 12pm | The Netball Centre

Team Bath and Strathclyde Sirens will come to Loughborough University for the second of the pre-season tournaments.

With unrivalled match day experience and fun for all the family, why not witness our new look team in action for the first time this season whilst watching some of the best sporting talent in the country.

Watch the action unfold whilst enjoying light refreshments, entertainment and three stellar games of netball.

Sunday 2nd February

LSU Action Chinese New Year

1 – 4pm | Fusion, LSU

Celebrate the Year of the Rate with LSU Action. This is a children’s craft event organised by Loughborough Student’s Union Action volunteers.

Activities include paper lantern making, games and Chinese treats. The suggested age range is between 5 – 11 years old.

Super Bowl LIV

Doors open 10:45pm, Kick off 11:30pm | Room 1, LSU

Watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl LIV playing live in Room 1.
