Loughborough University is proud of its inclusive culture that celebrates diversity and aims to ensure gender equality in all its activities. On International Women’s Day – and beyond – we’re highlighting the work and achievements of some of the brilliant women from across our community.

Monday 9th March
Happy Mondays: Capoeira
7 – 9pm | Cogs, LSU
Come and try Capoeira: the Brazilian sport that combines martial arts, percussion, movement and acrobatics.
This session is for absolute beginners with no previous experience of similar activity.
A £3 deposit per person must be paid at the time of booking. On completion of the workshop, this will receive the equivalent in loyalty points to spend on purchases in LSU. This deposit is non-refundable if you do not turn up on the day.

Tuesday 10th March
Space Industry lecture: Across the Solar System
6 – 7:30pm | SCH1.01, Schofield
There will be two speakers for this lecture:
Kevin Kilburn FRAS: ‘NOT 50 Shades of Grey’: How to observe the surface coloration of the Moon
Kevin joined Manchester Astronomical Society in 1969 and have been a council member since 1970, serving as president on three separate occasions. He is currently vice-president and Honorary Life Member and has been consulted by agencies such as the London Science Museum.
Dr Jonathan Nichols: Juno Space Probe: Mission to Jupiter
Jonathan is a Reader in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. He has been the PI of six Hubble Space Telescope programs and was a member of the Planets Review Panel for the Cycle 21 HST Time Allocation Committee, and the NASA Solar System Workings 2 Panel. He is a Science Team Member on the NASA Juno mission to Jupiter.
Additionally, Loughborough’s rocketry team will give a brief overview of our hybrid rocket engine: Chimera.

Halls and Wellbeing: Community Games Session

Support your health and wellbeing this term with a programme of fun and uplifting activities for you to try..
Games session for all of the gamers and people feeling competitive! Get together with students and have your pick of card games, board games and the like.

Wednesday 11th March
Postgraduate Open Evening: Loughborough University

If you think postgraduate study might be for you, our London postgraduate open evening provides an opportunity for you to interact with academic staff and students who are currently studying a master’s or research programme at Loughborough University London. You’ll be able to ask questions about our postgraduate programmes and find out more about the vibrant postgraduate community
We offer master’s and PhDs in a wide range of subject areas, including:

Public Lecture: Can exercise help fight cancer?
5:30 – 7pm | Room 1.39, NCSEM
Dr Fehmidah Munir, Reader in Health Psychology at Loughborough University will discuss the most influential studies in this area.
The lecture will explore which cancers have been linked to physical inactivity and how exercise helps to reduce the risk.
Being physically inactive or leading a sedentary lifestyle may increase the risk of developing some cancers such as breast and colon cancer. Being physically active may not only help prevent the risk of these cancers but can also help with recovery when undergoing treatment.

Thursday 12th March
International Women’s Festival

The International Women’s Festival has been organised in partnership with Women’s Network and LU Arts. As a Welfare and Diversity association, the Women’s Network works to both educate people about women’s struggles and celebrate their achievements, and this festival does exactly that by informing people of the obstacles women face whilst also celebrating their successes despite these struggles.
With live performances from students and an exhibition of their art, this special one-off event for International Women’s Week 2020 is not to be missed!
Students will be presenting their poems, illustrations and plays about a self-identifying woman who has inspired them. The work will also be displayed around campus all week.

Inspirational Female Leaders in STEM
6:15 – 8:30pm | WPT.005, West Park Teaching Hub
To mark International Women’s Day, and British Science Week, Careers Network and Women’s Engineering Society bring you an exclusive guest speaker event.
Come along to hear exclusive speakers talk about the realities of climbing to senior positions in the workplace as a female. They will share their personal experiences, struggles and successes they have experienced whilst progressing within their career.
Speakers confirmed work in a number of high profile organisations and in a variety of areas within STEM. They will share their stories and tips as well as give insights on their employer’s activities to support female identifying colleagues in the workplace. You will also have the opportunity to speak with the guest speakers after the event during informal networking session.

A Slice of Market Pie: Your Guide to Market Research
6:30 – 8pm | The Start-Up Lab, 2.01 (Ideas Factory), STEMLab
A workshop series with a difference, this programme is open to all students across campus and focuses on the basic entrepreneurial skills and knowledge you need to get started in thinking about being self-employed, starting-up a business or applying yourself in industry.
In this session, you will explore how to identify your slice of the market, begin identifying your target audience and building customer profiles, as well as considering how to effectively analyse your competitors.

Saturday 14th March
Loughborough University Dance Competition
14 Mar 9am – 15 Mar 6pm | Sir David Wallace Sports Hall
Loughborough Students Dance Club hosts the largest inter-university dance competition in the UK on the 14th and 15th March with over 22 universities competing!
Come and watch dancers from all over the UK compete in Ballet, Tap, Wildcard, Latin, Jazz, Contemporary and Hip Hop categories.

LSU Sing! Presents: A Chorus of Colour
7pm | Cope Auditorium
Loughborough University’s student choir perform their annual showcase: a colourful evening of song and performance.
Come on down to the Cope for a range of music spanning across the musical spectrum: The Lion King, Billy Joel, Rag’n’Bone Man, and more.
All proceeds from the event go to Ashmount School, a local school supporting children with special educational needs – there will also be a raffle so make sure to bring some cash.
Tickets are £6 for students/concessions, £8 for adults, and under 12’s are free. Tickets are available to buy on the door with cash or card, or online at www.lsu.co.uk/societies/lsusing (Available to purchase soon).
