Christina Flesher Fominaya: Democracy Reloaded

05 Feb | 2 – 3pm | K109, Herbert Manzoni

In this talk, Dr Flesher Fominaya presents material from her new book – Democracy Reloaded: Inside Spain’s Political laboratory from 15-M to Podemos.

She focuses on the ways in which the 15-M Indignados movement shifted from critique to the resignification of democracy and how movement praxis evolved around a central framework that encompassed three main ideational streams: autonomy, feminism and technopolitics (ie hacker ethics).

She then interrogates the specific interpretive frameworks that underlie this conception of ‘real democracy’, showing first how they manifested in the occupation camp in Madrid, and then how they manifest in practice beyond the movements that brought them together.

Public Seminar: Antisemitism and misogyny online – Cristian Tileaga

05 Feb | 2 – 4pm | B111, Brockington

Cristian address the various intersections between antisemitism and online misogyny against women active in public life.

In the context of a profound coarsening of political debate in Britain and elsewhere, female Jewish MPs who are active in public life come regularly up against a barrage of abuse and intimidation online.

The paper argues that misogyny is a specific class of prejudice that harms the dignity of women by calling into question women’s (human) rights to participation in public life, freedom of expression, and personal safety. The alliance between misogyny and antisemitism inflicts harm through violence and indignity.

Risk Music: A Workshop with Helen Papaioannou

07 Feb | 1 – 4pm | Cope Auditorium, Backstage Room

A participatory musical workshop exploring risk in group communication.

Led by composer/performer Helen Papaioannou, this workshop explores risk related aspects of group communication, probing systems and strategies that coordinate behaviours and groupings. This draws upon Helen’s work into games and group behaviour in performance, and is informed by her recent discussions with academic researchers in the School of Architecture, Civil and Building Engineering and the Department of Chemistry at Loughborough University.

Through games and activities with percussion instruments, we’ll consider risk and resilience in aspects of group behaviour, such as self-assembly, group stability and the coordination of individual and collective actions. These sound-based activities will also explore how group interaction can serve as a starting point for artistic performances or musical works.

No performance experience or musical ability is necessary.
