To recognise the day, here&#8217;s some of the research our scientists &amp; academics have been working on. Our wider student and staff bodies have also been involved; see how below.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Guidance to support cancer patients returning to work<\/h3>\n<p>Academics from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsem-em.org.uk\/\">NCSEM<\/a> were last year commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iosh.co.uk\/\">IOSH<\/a> to produce a set of guidelines for employers to help support those who had battled cancer to return to work. It focuses on tailoring care to individual needs, rather than a blanket approach, and asks managers to recognise a change in capacity, as well as the need to be flexible. You can read the full report on the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2DKhCfV\">IOSH website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/media\/wwwlboroacuk\/external\/content\/mediacentre\/pressreleases\/2017\/01\/GettyImages-601398828.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Loughborough smashes national record for stem cell donor recruitment<\/h3>\n<p>In case you missed it, last year we made a lot of noise about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/events\/spithappens\/\">#SpitHappens<\/a>, a collaborative event with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.co.uk\/\">LSU<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthonynolan.org\/\">Anthony Nolan<\/a> &amp; the <a href=\"http:\/\/rikbasra.com\/\">Rik Basra\u00a0Leukaemia Campaign<\/a>, aimed to recruit as many people aged 16-30 to join the Anthony Nolan register. Anthony Nolan helps people who have blood disorders or blood cancer to find a stem cell transplant match.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spit Happens sets new stem cell donor record\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w_st876E138?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2017\/march\/loughborough-smashes-national-record-for-stem-cell-donor-recruitment.html\">resounding success with over 2,000 people<\/a> joining in just 12 hours. As an added bonus, we set the new record for registrations at a university in one day. Want to find out more? Squeezing the recommended 150 minutes of activity into one or two sessions per week rather than shorter but more frequent bouts didn&#8217;t show much difference, and overall the study shows the least risk came from adults who were regularly active.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/media\/wwwlboroacuk\/external\/content\/mediacentre\/pressreleases\/2017\/01\/GettyImages-467986222.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Exploring the benefits of Race for Life<\/h3>\n<p>Last year our researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2017\/april\/new-study-race-for-life-participants\/\">ran a number of groups<\/a> across the East Midlands to help women prepare for a Race for Life event, and examine the benefits of doing so through a number of sessions.
