Well, before you start putting together your application, we asked a few of our current interns to give you their top tips for applying for a role, a brief overview of what they’ve enjoyed most about their year, and a few lessons that they’ve learnt along the way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joanna Dobell <\/h3>\n\n\n\nLoughborough University London Marketing Intern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Joanna is a recent Loughborough graduate, completing her degree in Geography (BSc) in 2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n“My favourite part of this role is how varied it can be and the number of things to get involved in. I have been able to represent Loughborough University London at Open Evenings and fairs, as well as help create engaging content for the University\u2019s social media channels, blog and website.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Having the opportunity to get involved with Loughborough University London\u2019s Graduation 2018. It was a fantastic day being involved in the running of the event and by doing a social media takeover of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year <\/h5>\n\n\n\n I have developed personally and professionally throughout this internship. I have been able to develop and learn new skills, such as my written and verbal communication, time-management, the ability to work under pressure and team work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n I would recommend showing your passion and enthusiasm for Loughborough University and how you would use such passion in one of the marketing positions. Show why you would be an excellent candidate by being yourself, using relevant examples and demonstrating your skills!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emily Capewell and Lauren Gull <\/h3>\n\n\n\nStudent Recruitment Interns<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Emily is a graduate who studied English (BA) at Loughborough. Lauren is a current student on a placement year who studies Retail Marketing and Management (BSci).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Student Recruitment Internship has been invaluable in developing both my professional and personal skill set. I have had the opportunity to represent the University at Higher Education Fairs and UCAS Fairs across the country, help organise Community Day events, develop presentations and assist with on-campus visits and residentials. This role is filled with variety and every day is different.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Emily<\/strong>: Getting the local community involved with our Creative and STEM Community Days which I organised with a colleague. Representing the University at event on campus, UCAS and HE fairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLauren<\/strong>: Helping to organise the Inspiring Minds events on campus and informing people at HE events.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTop tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Get across your passion and enthusiasm for Loughborough University and the Loughborough experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year <\/h5>\n\n\n\n Emily<\/strong>: I think the lesson I have learnt is just in self-confidence. I feel like the internship has really developed me as a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLauren<\/strong>: How much I enjoy interacting with students and what I am looking for in a future career.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMegan Bennett <\/h3>\n\n\n\nDigital Media Intern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Megan is a current student at Loughborough University undertaking a placement year. She studies Social Psychology (BSc).<\/p>\n\n\n\n“My role this year has given me the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects. I have gained invaluable experience across many areas of digital marketing, such as creating content for social media, working with the video team, and learning about web development.” <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Attending a digital marketing workshop in Manchester with Future Index, where I learnt about some of the most exciting trends in HE marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n I’ve learnt to step out of my comfort zone. This year given me lots of opportunities to try new things and challenge myself, and this has helped me to gain confidence, broaden my experiences, and become more resilient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Use examples to demonstrate your skills and experiences. These could include previous work experience, voluntary roles or committee positions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Callum Parke<\/h3>\n\n\n\nAlumni Engagement Intern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Callum is a current student undertaking a placement year in Marketing and Advancement. He is studying for a BA in Politics, History and International Relations <\/p>\n\n\n\n“My writing and people skills have improved through hosting events and writing regular news stories and no two days are the same as 200,000 alumni all have different questions!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Standing next to Lord Sebastian Coe at the opening of the Elite Athlete Centre <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Appreciate your weekends! Use your annual leave and free time wisely and appreciate it when it comes around, as you\u2019ll soon be back in the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Be honest \u2013 if you don\u2019t have experience in a certain area, don\u2019t pretend as people can easily see through it. Instead, admit it but show you\u2019re keen to learn and adapt to new challenges<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sammie Man<\/h3>\n\n\n\nDigital Engagement Intern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Sammie graduated with a BA Hons degree in English and Drama in July 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n“Working at Loughborough University has given me the opportunity to work on a variety of different aspects of Digital Media, from running the University\u2019s social media accounts, covering large-scale events, and helping to build websites.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Working at the School Games only three weeks into my internship. I had the opportunity to get out and about to cover different sport fixtures and help manage a team of ambassadors, which was something I really enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Whatever you do, do it with confidence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Show a willingness to learn. If you don\u2019t already have some of the technical skills (e.g. photoshop) that are suggested in the job description, highlight that you are prepared to learn and develop your skills in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grace Lewis<\/h3>\n\n\n\nLU Arts Marketing Intern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Grace graduated from Loughborough in 2018 with a BSc Hons degree in Geography<\/p>\n\n\n\n“My internship with LU Arts has given me a valuable insight into a career in marketing and has been a great way to ease in to working life post-education. Every day within the internship is different, from office-based work and meeting clients in London to representing LU Arts at open days.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n All the great things you get to be involved in through Loughborough. A highlight was definitely attending the Coach Core awards with special guests, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n I have learnt to say yes to things and try new experiences and opportunities that come with the job. Don\u2019t be afraid to step out your comfort zone and try something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Apply early to\ngive yourself time to prepare for the interview. I found it useful to look at\nthe requirements mentioned in the job description and mention how I could show\nthose skills required in my application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hannah Thompson<\/h3>\n\n\n\nDigital Intern (Loughborough Sport)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Hannah\u00a0graduated from Loughborough in 2018 with a MA in Global Media and Cultural Industries Masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n“I have grown so much as a person in the role and the confidence it has given me is honestly transformational. I have had so many opportunities to lead projects, student volunteer teams and manage the social output of Loughborough Sport. I\u2019ve learnt never to doubt myself or my ability.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s been far too many! Meeting some incredible athletes and celebrities including interviewing Ant Middleton, Dame Katherine Grainger and Gabby Logan has got to be up there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although, my favourite moment has got to be working with Loughborough Lightning KSL in the summer making some fantastic networks in the press box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Self-belief. I can honestly say applying for this role was the best decision I have ever made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Don\u2019t be afraid to talk about achievements and make sure your personality shines through. Be creative, original and go beyond the obvious. Bring examples of your work, if its social why not screen shot and present your tweets, Instagram posts and Facebook posts. Make sure you show your passion for sport and understand the current sports marketing climate. Know your audience and be confident in what you\u2019ll bring to the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hannah Timson <\/h3>\n\n\n\nDigital Engagement Intern (Academic Recruitment)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n Hannah graduated from Loughborough in 2018 with a BA Hons degree in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n“The role has allowed me to develop a new and diverse skill set as well as engage with many opportunities for both personal and professional development. It has been the ideal position following on from graduation.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Memorable moment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Getting to accompany the video team to locations around the country to create new material. Also standing six feet away from Prince Harry was pretty special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lesson I’ll take away from this year<\/h5>\n\n\n\n To have more self-confidence and not to be embarrassed about asking for help if you’re not sure how to do something. This internship is a unique opportunity to work directly with an amazing group of people who are always happy to help you enhance your skills in their specialised area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top tip for applying<\/h5>\n\n\n\n Let your personality shine through in your application. Also make sure to back up any points that you make with evidence of ways that you have shown a particular skill through either voluntary or paid employment, or through involvement in committees and societies during your time at University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
