Chemical engineering senior lecturer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/chemical\/about\/people\/andrewstapley\/\">Dr Andrew Stapley<\/a> gives his definitive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/chemical\/newsandevents\/how-to-make-the-perfect-cup-of-tea.html\">step-by-step guide<\/a> on how to make the best cup of tea.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dr Stapley&#8217;s research on the &#8216;perfect&#8217; brew was inspired partly by the work of George Orwell, who himself had written an essay titled &#8220;A Nice Cup of Tea&#8221; (1946) first published in the London Evening Standard newspaper. James May, former BBC Top Gear presenter, also featured Dr Stapley&#8217;s work in his widely popular book &#8220;Man Lab: The Book of Usefulness&#8221; (2011).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/04\/giphy-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-911 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/04\/giphy-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, here it is &#8211; Dr Andrew Stapley&#8217;s step-by-step guide on how to make the perfect cup of tea:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use Assam tea<\/li>\n<li>Use a clean, warm china or earthenware pot<\/li>\n<li>Add one spoonful of tea (or tea bag) per cup<\/li>\n<li>Use freshly drawn water, boiled once only to retain as much oxygen as possible to bind with tea polyphenols<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hard water (calcium ions) to prevent tea \u201cscum\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Best flavour is achieved using a high temperature, but short time infusion<\/li>\n<li>Stir the teapot<\/li>\n<li>Leave to brew for 3 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Add the tea to the milk \u2013 rather than the other way around<\/li>\n<li>Add sugar if you like but only use white sugar and not too much<\/li>\n<li>Drink tea at 60-65\u00b0C<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/04\/giphy.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-912\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/04\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We actively encourage and support all types of pioneering research. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/research\/spotlights\/\">Learn more about the research we perform and the impact it has on society and our day-to-day lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s #NationalTeaDay!
