Holly Collison UN Meeting

12 November 2018

1 min

Dr Holly Collison, Lecturer within the Institute for Sport Business, has received an invitation from the UN to attend an expert meeting on the use of sport as a tool to prevent violent extremism.

Youth development and engagement are cross-cutting issues in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To effectively prevent violent extremism and strengthen social cohesion, the provision of adequate assistance to youth from different backgrounds is considered vital. Therefore, the United Nations Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism calls for a series of measures aimed at building a culture of tolerance and resilience to violence, including by empowering youth through supporting the learning of new skills.

The Expert Group Meeting will take place from 10th to 11th December in Vienna, organised by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in cooperation with UNESCO. This meeting aims to contribute to an increased understanding of how sport and sport-based learning can effectively be used to target risk and protective factors related to violent extremism.
