{"id":3976,"date":"2021-04-26T15:53:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T14:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/?p=3976"},"modified":"2025-05-27T11:01:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T10:01:13","slug":"the-role-of-the-european-parliament-in-managing-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/research\/the-role-of-the-european-parliament-in-managing-brexit","title":{"rendered":"The role of the European Parliament in managing Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this blog for LSE, Lecturer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/institutes\/diplomacy-international-governance\/\">Diplomacy and International Affairs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/about\/staff\/nicola-chelotti\/\">Dr Nicola Chelotti<\/a>, together with\u00a0Edoardo Bressanelli\u00a0and\u00a0Wilhelm Lehmann explore the role of the European Parliament in managing Brexit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What influence did the European Parliament have in the Brexit negotiations?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How did Brexit affect the distribution of power inside the European Parliament?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Politics and Governance&nbsp;<\/em>has recently published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogitatiopress.com\/politicsandgovernance\/issue\/view\/241\">a Thematic Issue<\/a>&nbsp;on the consequences of Brexit for EU institutions, such as the Council of the EU and the Court of Justice, and transnational actors like interest groups or financial organisations. The Issue has shown that \u2013 while Brexit has been generally regarded as a threat to integration or a trigger of disintegration \u2013 the Union has been able to prepare itself for the departure of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can speculate on the drivers of this institutional adaptation. The EU may seek to protect itself from the \u2018malign\u2019 influence of a soon-to-be third country. It may fear the organizational consequences of withdrawal and seek minimizing potential disruptions. It could be guided by the willingness to \u2018punish\u2019 disintegration and prevent further exits. Whatever the reason, one of the key findings of the project has been the capacity of the EU to adapt (so far) to the challenges posed by Brexit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This conclusion stands also for the European Parliament (EP).
