{"id":4806,"date":"2023-07-10T13:39:35","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T12:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/?p=4806"},"modified":"2025-05-27T10:33:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T09:33:11","slug":"diplomacy-talk-and-social-students-of-idia-meet-british-diplomat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/institute-for-diplomacy-and-international-affairs\/diplomacy-talk-and-social-students-of-idia-meet-british-diplomat","title":{"rendered":"Diplomacy Talk and Social: Students of IDIA Meet British Diplomat\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cAre diplomats still relevant?\u201d \u201cHow has diplomacy changed?\u201d \u201cWhat are the preconditions for a successful diplomatic endeavour?\u201d These are some of the perennial questions occupying students of diplomacy and have variously been tackled in theoretical and scholarly discussions at our programmes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/institutes\/diplomacy-international-governance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs (IDIA)<\/a>. However, they acquired a new significance when addressed to a practicing diplomat at a recent IDIA event: Master\u2019s students were able to hear first-hand answers to these and other questions from British diplomat and civil servant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/christopher-holtby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christopher Holtby OBE.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-1024x543.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-768x407.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-1536x815.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent-2048x1086.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his extensive career, Chris has served in Brussels as UK liaison officer to Javier Solana, the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, and policy adviser to Dr Solana on Asia\/Pacific issues; as Deputy Head of Security Policy Department in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, responsible for UK policy on NATO, European Security, military and civil-military operations and co-operation, as well as maritime security; and been in the role of the chairman of Working Group 1 of the international Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia. Later, he has also served as Ambassador to the Republic of Estonia; Consul General in Melbourne; and Head of the UK Office for South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussions revolved around the questions raised above, in light of specific events and experiences drawn from Chris\u2019s career, ranging from conflict resolution in Indonesia, to confronting international piracy, and multilateral maritime cooperation and coordination. Students learnt how the success of the latter required not only technical know-how and problem-solving skills, but also skilful negotiation and relationship-building.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These discussions resonated with themes covered in our various modules, especially themes of change in diplomacy and <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books\/about\/Transprofessional_Diplomacy.html?id=lnodMQAACAAJ&amp;redir_esc=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transprofessionalisation<\/a> covered in <em>Diplomacy in the Digital Age<\/em>; diplomatic negotiation covered in <em>International Negotiation<\/em>, respectively studied in all or most of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/institutes\/diplomacy-international-governance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our programmes<\/a>;&nbsp; themes of peace-building and international security covered in MSc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/study\/masters-degrees\/security-peace-building-diplomacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Security, Peace-building and Diplomacy<\/a>; and themes related to the development-security nexus covered in our module <em>The Politics of Violence: Development, Security, Sustainability<\/em> taken by students of IDIA as well as the cross-Institute interdisciplinary programmes contributing to Loughborough London initiative&nbsp;<em><strong>Development and Social Change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-1024x602.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-1024x602.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-768x451.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-1536x903.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/london\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/07\/DiplomacyEvent2-2048x1204.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students had the opportunity to raise and discuss a variety of questions concerning them, from the current situation in Ukraine to China\u2019s foreign policy. The discussion concluded with advice on pursuing career in diplomacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talk was followed by an informal supper and social event, where students were able to continue the conversation with Chris less formally.
