With teaching completed and dissertation supervision underway, summer is the time when the IDIA academic team crack on with some research and writing of their own. This summer, like every summer, is a busy one. Here\u2019s an update on what we\u2019re all working on while trying to stay cool in the never-ending series of heatwaves that have swept across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Tim Oliver<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>approved the final copy-edits of ‘Understanding the UK and EU: A Concise Introduction’ (due later this year with BUP), so is now finishing an article on England in UK foreign policy and beginning research into anti-Britishness around the world. He\u2019s also completing a book on the UK’s relations with Europe, which he will present at the APSA (the American Political Science Association) conference in Boston this September. He will also be writing about the future of the UK-US relationship for a project in the USA looking at the post-2028 presidential administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor<\/strong> Aidan McGarry<\/strong><\/a> has written three chapters this year on identity and protest, art and marginalised groups’ identity, and grounded normative theory and environmental activism. He submitted a large research grant (\u00a31 million) to the UKRI on protest and policy on overtourism in the UK, Spain and Malaysia. With project colleagues, he is writing two journal articles on community activism and policy in mass tourism cities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr<\/strong> Cristian Nitoiu<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>recently published an article on the way the EU has transformed its strategic priorities following the start of the war in Ukraine, and another on how civil society organisations in Peru, Turkey, and Nigeria are adapting their practices to growing geopolitical uncertainty in the world. He is also currently working on an article on the role of diplomatic gifts. During the summer, he will be laying the groundwork with colleagues for the start of a three-year project on the future enlargement of the European Union. He will also present, in early September, at the annual UACES conference in Prague, a paper on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr<\/strong> Nicola Chelotti<\/strong><\/a> has submitted two pieces on EU politics: a journal article on how the European Council influences EU legislation, shifting outcomes closer to member-state preferences and further from those of the European Parliament; and a chapter on Europarties and European Parliament political groups for an OUP textbook on EU institutions, co-edited by our colleague Dermot Hodson. He is currently working on a paper examining how interstate and interpersonal trust affect negotiations among UN diplomats, drawing on an original survey of 170 diplomats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Helen Drake<\/strong><\/a> has been an external examiner on two PhDs, one on the influence of France on German preference formation at times of EU crises; the other on how French presidents construct a TV persona within changing media logics in the Fifth French Republic. She is conducting research for a journal article on the subject of France in the world asking, amongst other things, whether  France is adrift and exposed, or strategically savvy. And she is pondering, along with everyone else, whether Marine Le Pen will actually run in the 2027 French presidential elections, whether she will do so wearing an electronic tag, as a convicted criminal, whether she will win; and if she wins, what it means for France. She plans to turn these ponderings into a small grant application for submission in early 2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Tatevik Mnatsakanyan<\/strong><\/a> recently secured a book contract with the Routledge Series Interventions in Critical International Relations, so is currently working on her monograph \u2018Sovereignty through the Long War on Terror: Carnivals of Resistance and Terror\u2019, due to be published in 2027. The book synthesises psychoanalytic theories to understand collective experiences of \u2018crisis\u2019, contemporary political thought on sovereignty, as well as cultural studies to think through long-term processes of state-society relations and change in protest culture in the UK. She is also working with Giulia Piccolino at the Department for International Relations, Politics and History on the project \u2018Legacies of Insecurity: Past and Future\u2019, building collaborations for research into the long-term impact of events affecting human security (armed conflicts, genocides and natural disasters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Neil Mortimer<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>recently contributed a chapter to an upcoming Edward Elgar book titled \u2018Trust, Transparency, and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Perspectives from Europe and Asia\u2019. His chapter examines policy learning and the influence of expert advice in Australia\u2019s and the UK\u2019s COVID-19 responses. He is also working on a REF impact case study exploring how research has shaped emergency preparedness and resilience practices across the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Massimo D’Angelo<\/strong><\/a> is currently completing a book on the relationship between EU accession negotiations and authoritarianisation in T\u00fcrkiye. At the same time, he is publishing articles on religion, European identity and political theology, while working on a collaborative research project examining the social and political consequences of overtourism and sustainable governance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
