However, we could not have reached this stage without the support of staff from the <a title=\"Digital Curation Centre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dcc.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Curation Centre<\/a>. They gave a workshop where they advised us on the points our policy should cover and directed us to appropriate policies of other universities.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point was to consider <a title=\"RCUK common principles on data\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/research\/datapolicy\/\" target=\"_blank\">RCUK&#8217;s common principles on data<\/a> and how we might align our research data management policy to these principles. We then looked at examples of research data management policies from other universities. We were particularly impressed with the <a title=\"University of Edinburgh's RDM policy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/about\/policies-and-regulations\/research-data-policy\" target=\"_blank\">University of\u00a0Edinburgh&#8217;s research data management policy<\/a> and this provided the starting point for our own policy. Talking through this policy and \u00a0others we realised that it was possible to separate policy statements and stakeholder responsibilities. This is exactly what the University of Oxford have done in their <a title=\"University of Oxfords research data and records policy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.admin.ox.ac.uk\/media\/global\/wwwadminoxacuk\/localsites\/researchdatamanagement\/documents\/Policy_on_the_Management_of_Research_Data_and_Records.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">policy on the management of research data and records<\/a>.
