But why would we, as a University, have anything to do with schools? Some of us may remember we used to be a Technical Institute and many variations of a College, but never a School surely\u2026 Well, it turns out that, for a while, Loughborough College, predecessor to Loughborough University, housed a Junior School, where under 18s would be taught in preparation for college years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that amongst our holdings of research papers, all grown students\u2019 memories, and very serious higher education \u201cstuff\u201d, childhood stories and voices loiter\u2026 We hold the archives of <a href=\"https:\/\/lboro.accesstomemory.org\/loughborough-college-school-1917-1946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Loughborough College School<\/a> (LCS), which date back as far as the 17<sup>th<\/sup> Century, and has seen many generations of pupils, and continues to shape Loughborough communities today as <a href=\"https:\/\/charnwoodcollege.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charnwood College<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-scaled.jpeg\" rel=\"lightbox[574]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"654\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-1024x654.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-1024x654.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-300x191.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-768x490.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-1536x980.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/rdm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/03\/LCS.7.10.7_A-2048x1307.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We \u201conly\u201d have records from the 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup> Centuries, but there is a wealth of photographs to help us remember what it would have been like to study Handicrafts, Domestic Science, Art, and so much more. Alumni of Loughborough College School have been kindly donating and adding to the collection over the years: thanks to them and to the very active School Association, users can now read about what it was like&nbsp;to<a href=\"https:\/\/lboro.accesstomemory.org\/jo-stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> shop for uniforms in the 1950s<\/a> (not exactly something for the runway!), or marvel at the labour of love that is <a href=\"https:\/\/lboro.accesstomemory.org\/susan-beall-ivor-jalland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Susan Beall\u2019s sewing and embroidering diary<\/a>. Through this collection, we connect to the past in a very vivid and immediate way, learning how people lived, worked and <a href=\"https:\/\/lboro.accesstomemory.org\/swimming-match-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">played<\/a>, as far back as the 1920s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loughborough University Archive has retro-converted the paper-based finding aid for the LCS collection. The new catalogue is available on our <a href=\"https:\/\/lboro.accesstomemory.org\/records-of-loughborough-college-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AtoM database<\/a> and some information is also available on <a href=\"https:\/\/archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk\/search\/archives\/7da1ee7c-e6e7-305d-9893-923833d96849?terms=%22Loughborough%20College%20School%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ArchiveHub<\/a>, which will be more familiar and accessible to some of our users.
