During this week \u2013 \u201cNutrition and Hydration Week\u201d &#8211; there is a global focus on how important these two factors are in contributing to an individual\u2019s lifelong health and wellbeing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As well as focusing on elite sporting performance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/departments\/sport-exercise-health-sciences\/sport-exercise-science\/\">Sports Science<\/a> students (like myself) study a range of population health topics including diet, physical activity and weight management which are all becoming increasingly important in the context of the global obesity pandemic. Due to the physical and financial burdens of an unhealthy population, research into how to prevent weight gain and implement intervention programs has boomed!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1438\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1438\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1438\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-370x246.jpg 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/ncsem1-770x513.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natonal Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nowhere is this more obvious than at the recently developed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsem-em.org.uk\/\">National Centre for Sport &amp; Exercise Medicine<\/a>, where I am currently completing a research project for my final-year dissertation. A very good friend of mine, Tepi, has spent a vast amount of time (outside of his Sports Science degree) supporting research into the dangers of sedentary behaviour and how to tackle these issues, with projects like <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/active-lessons-can-boost-childrens-learning-and-health-72240\">active classroom learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst living here, however, it is often easy to forget the notion of an unhealthy population as (in my opinion) the average Loughborough student partakes in more activity, and carries less excess weight than the average population. And not just for your elite sportsmen and women but for your typical student too, as healthy choices are encouraged and, importantly, are easy to make. Loughborough offers sporting opportunities across the whole spectrum of abilities, ranging from high-level <a href=\"http:\/\/loughboroughsport.com\/athletic-union\/\">Athletic Union<\/a> (University) teams to <a href=\"http:\/\/loughboroughsport.com\/ims\/\">Intramural<\/a> (between halls) Sports to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/loughboroughsport.com\/my-lifestyle\/\">My Lifestyle<\/a>\u201d, which offers free beginners\u2019 classes in activities like UV Zumba and Wheelchair Basketball!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1434\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/IMG_3021-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/IMG_3021-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/IMG_3021-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/IMG_3021-370x493.jpg 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/03\/IMG_3021-770x1027.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a chap who has always loved playing, coaching and watching sport, I was initially worried that my involvement in sport might decline due to the reputation Loughborough has for competitive sport. However, like many others, I\u2019m now happily involved in the sports at the competition-level that I want to play at. I play football twice-a-week with my mates for West Harambe FC in an LSU 5-a-side league and a 6-a-side social league, and also play competitive badminton doubles with a housemate on a Wednesday \u2013 all of which has cost me the grand total of \u00a316 for the year! Beyond that I either run or cycle to explore the countryside surrounding Loughborough and get involved in events like \u2018GoTRI\u2019 triathlons and \u2018Tough Mudder\u2019.
