I learned more about how seminal work of the past is being innovated upon today by notable researchers focusing on industrial economics.<\/p>\n<p>Academic take-aways aside, the conference dinner took place at the Acropolis Museum with the Parthenon cast against the backdrop of the night sky.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3769 size-full\" of Athens and the history of the region was undoubtedly a highlight of the trip\u00a0as I took\u00a0leave\u00a0for a couple of days following the conference to further explore the city.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the United States, many European destinations are viewed as exotic destinations that only the rich or very luck will ever have a chance to\u00a0visit.\u00a0I guess that makes me very lucky!\u00a0Since arriving in the United Kingdom, the proximity of Europe and historical sites like the Acropolis in Athens has me in a tizzy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" oldest\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0in the world, visiting Athens was an education in and of itself!\u00a0Both in terms of the ancient past\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" birthplace of democracy and continues to this day as a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy. While there, I was fortunate to see an ancient Greek\u00a0comedy\u00a0the \u201cFrogs\u201d performed in the\u00a0Odeon of\u00a0Herodes\u00a0Atticus\u00a0(completed in 161 AD).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1608\" height=\"905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9.png 1608w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9-370x208.png 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit9-770x433.png 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1608px) 100vw, 1608px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there were subtitles in English across a screen behind the live performance, although much of the humour was admittedly a bit out of date as the play was written in 405 BC.\u00a0Though apparently farting jokes were as common then as they are now \u2026 some things never go out of style.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3774 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8.png 1920w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8-370x208.png 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/12\/edit8-770x433.png 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mindful of the current state of world affairs with the ever-present tension between ideologies of different flavours and roots, visiting Athens reminded me of the importance of developing knowledge, art and philosophy\u00a0within a free and democratic society.<\/p>\n<p>The people of Greece have weathered many storms, including the more recent financial one, and yet they continue to invest and manage those sectors of their country, their home, that make them uniquely Greek.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<i>Oikonomia<\/i><i>\u2019<\/i>\u00a0is the Greek word from with \u2018economics\u2019\u00a0is derived.
