Heard that stereotype of \u201cIt\u2019s hard to make it as a creative\u201d? Read my tips below on how it is possible!<!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>As a first year, I would deem myself as getting ahead of the game here! I feel this is very important no matter what career path you\u2019re going along. If you take any opportunity that is in front of you, it\u2019ll benefit you in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s my goal? Well, I aspire to pursue a career as a Graphic Designer, specifically what area within this spectrum yet I am unsure. Below I will discuss my main tips on how to get ahead of the game, through sharing how I personally am:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether this experience be paid or voluntary, anything that you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/careers\/students-and-graduates\/applications\/\">add to your CV<\/a> to make you stand out is essential. Recently, I have been volunteering to help with the marketing of a local Mexican restaurant in town called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cactuscafe.co.uk\/\">Cactus Caf\u00e9<\/a> (a very nice place to eat may I add), alongside 3 other students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did a photoshoot there, which will now allow me and my team to give their social media a makeover in a hope to entice more student clientele. Sometimes it\u2019s all about who you know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to use any links you have, even if it\u2019s a friend of a friend to help you gain experience or utilise their knowledge prior to your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at Loughborough the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/careers\/students-and-graduates\/\">Careers Network<\/a> are fantastic, they\u2019re always happy to help and give advice on anything that you may need. Ways to network here at Loughborough are through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/careers\/employers\/fairs-events\/\">Careers fairs<\/a> that happen throughout the year where you can talk to prospective employers, but also specific weeks linked to your certain field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I attended several talks during Creative Careers week, including a Digital Design talk with <a href=\"https:\/\/seedcreativity.co.uk\/\">Seed<\/a> Creative Director, Jon Prest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-370x208.png 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers-770x433.png 770w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/03\/creativecareers.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build up your skill set<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the talk, Jon Prest argued that, \u201cskills come first, closely followed by attitude\u201d. This means that you need to build up a strong skill set to make you stand out from other people in your field. As technology advances, employers look for technical skills (for my career path this involves being a whiz with the Adobe Suit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a screenshot of a recent animation I\u2019ve been working on using Adobe After Effects (for those budding graphic designers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynda.com\/\">Lynda.com<\/a> is a great resource for tutorials to develop your skills). Believe it or not, they are interested in the type of person you are too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.co.uk\/society\/stage\/\">Stage Society<\/a> and also do Tap for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/sport\/sports\/dance\/\">AU Dance<\/a>. These hobbies display my passion, dedication and ability to work in a team, which are all skills employers look for. At interviews you will be reviewed as an individual, so always look to be a happy, positive and hard-working person that can display that little bit of personality and flair within everything that they do! \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Final word of advice as said during the talk at Creative Careers week by Jon Prest, \u201cGet good\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A short and sweet statement to end this blog with, as at the end of the day it is a competitive industry, so you have to be the best and have that flair. Don\u2019t worry this takes time (I don\u2019t have my distinct style yet but I know it\u2019ll come with time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep grasping every opportunity and with time you will, \u201cGet good\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Panicked about a career in the creative industry?
