Returning home brings mixed feelings since the contrast between home life and Loughborough life is so huge! <!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Missing loved ones is felt both at University and at home as you live in your two separate bubbles. For this blog I\u2019ve decided to employ my close ones to get a feel of how they cope with these feelings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Homesickness at its worst<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the first day alone at University was the worst. You\u2019re feeling so overwhelmed, knowing almost no one and facing independent life without family for a few months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My best advice for a prospective student would be to feign confidence and dive head first into keeping busy with any distraction available. These distractions might include joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.co.uk\/getinvolved\/societies\/socslist\/\">society<\/a> (advertised at Societies Bazaar), a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/sport\/\">sport<\/a> (advertised at Sports Bazaar), continuing training, finding a job or delving into course reading will soon become your new life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sobbed as if I\u2019d never seen my family again on the first day of University, with my roommate staring at me like I was an alien from the opposite end of the room. She wants me to state that she feels very lucky compared to past generations that we have Skype\/Facetime because knowing that I am safe and emotionally well is such a reassurance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, a tip to cope with your homesickness is to ring your family or whoever you love because it means a lot to them! My mum\u2019s top tip for coping as a parent of a University student is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u2018Looking forward to the next time I see you. I\u2019ll think of a fun day to plan together, visiting or a shopping trip. If I\u2019m really missing her I will dust her bedroom because all her things remind me of her.\u2019 <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So be wild like my mum! Keep your room tidy and bond with your guardian over tidying your \u2018home room\u2019 for a topic of conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In seriousness though, my mum gives this advice to parents<em>: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u2018Remain that you are always available on <strong>their <\/strong>schedule to talk to them. Asking her how she copes with homesickness, she stated, \u2018I don\u2019t get homesick\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off to a great start, I focused on missing friends. She then deeply stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u2018Your home friends visiting you will always be odd, like an outer body experience. But when your two separate worlds collide, it\u2019s nice to have the most important people in my life all meet.\u2019 <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For when this happens, advertising what your University has to offer is key to show your friends what they\u2019re missing and bonding the two separate groups together.&nbsp; For example, our lovely Loughborough fountain! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-370x208.png 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree-770x433.png 770w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photothree.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8216;If you\u2019re worried that you and your friends are growing apart, don\u2019t be afraid to make first contact or reach out to people.&#8217; <\/p><cite>Mandy&#8217;s top tip!<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping in contact with your home friends as best as possible really helps with the big changes happening in your life once you start University. Everyone is in the same boat once you leave college or sixth form, so don\u2019t feel anxious if you drift apart for a while! The last\nsection of this blog is dedicated to the most important member of your life:\nyour pet(s). I know so many people at University who miss their pets over\neveryone else at home. Thus, it is vital to provide help to these students!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, take advantage of the animal meeting opportunities at the University such as puppy petting at the Student\u2019s Union, going on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.co.uk\/getinvolved\/action\/\">Action projects<\/a> such as the Alpaca farm (I met a cat at the alpaca farm!) or dog walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-1024x634.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-1024x634.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-768x476.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-370x229.png 370w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive-770x477.png 770w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/photofive.png 1967w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kittycafe.co.uk\/locations\/nottingham\">Kitten caf\u00e9<\/a> in Nottingham for a pet-revolved day trip! Again, FaceTiming your pet is revolutionary, especially when they react to your voice! Additionally, there\u2019s a Facebook group called \u2018Loughborough Pet Posting\u2019 which really helps to fill the pet-sized gaps in your heart whilst away from home!
