As a first year Graphic Communication and Illustration student, I took the time to look around Loughborough\u2019s annual Art Degree Show exhibition<\/a>. I found this truly inspiring knowing that I\u2019ll be up there in 2 years time. <\/p>\n\n\n

The diversity of work on show across all the disciplines (Graphic Communication and Illustration<\/a>, Textiles<\/a>, Fine Art<\/a> and the foundation course<\/a>) was immense. The show is on everyday 10am-5pm until 16th<\/sup> June, don\u2019t miss out on a beautiful display of young talent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below I have picked out a few pieces that inspired me from a range of disciplines, hopefully showing you the array of work Loughborough students produce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Foundation Visual Communication Student \u2013 Iona Campbell <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Having completed an Art and Design\nFoundation here at Loughborough last year, I found it interesting to have a\nlook around at this year\u2019s cohort of students\u2019 work. The display of talent from\na younger and less experienced group of students was very eye-opening. Iona\nCampbell\u2019s, \u2018Princess Artypants\u2019 instantly caught my eye and made me chuckle.\nHer quirky illustration style, cleverly positioning of typography and bold use\nof vibrant colour created what I deemed a very professional piece of work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I understand that many people struggle\ndeciding whether they should do a foundation or not, I thought I\u2019d ask Iona to\nshare her experience of her time on foundation. I would just like to echo with\nwhat Iona says below and express that if you\u2019re lacking a bit of experience, a\nfoundation course is incredibly beneficial. I loved that year of being free\nwithout the constraints experienced previously during A-Levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: How have you found the Foundation\nCourse here at Loughborough?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLoughborough\u2019s Art and Design Foundation Programme has been extremely valuable in helping me discover where my passions lie. The diagnostic nature of the course has allowed me to explore all disciplines and uncover a great interest in Visual Communication. The specialist tutors are very supportive and encouraging. I have gained the confidence to express myself freely through illustration.<\/p>

My final project, \u2018Princess Artypants\u2019, is a reflection on my first year at University and all the challenges it has brought me. I hope to continue exploring methods of working and improving my conceptual understanding in Loughborough\u2019s Graphic Communication and Illustration Undergraduate Course.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fine Art – Jessica Benham <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As a Graphic Communication and Illustration\nstudent, I often find it difficult to understand the meaning behind Fine Art\nworks, however Jessica\u2019s display surrounding the topical issue of violence\ntowards women instantly clicked with me. I found her controversial drawings of\nkey political issues very engaging and felt she had taken on a really\nchallenging topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: How would you summarise your work?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy practice aims to educate and raise awareness around violence and abuse towards women. I have found this subject very challenging but at the same time rewarding.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Textiles – Johanna Stubbs<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Joanna is a textiles student who\nspecialises in Print. As well as her eye-catching digital and hand\nscreen-prints, Joanna likes to experiment with different media to find new,\ninnovative ways of creating patterns, such as fabric manipulation and\nlaser-cut. By using bold colours and statement designs, Joanna sees her work\nsuitable for public spaces such as quirky bars or contemporary shops. It was\nher boldness and ability to take risks that caught my eye whilst walking around\nthe diverse Textiles exhibition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: How would you describe your vibrant\ncollection? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Call Me Crazy\u2019 is a collection filled with colour and pattern, to try and bring the Dada movement into the 21st<\/sup> century. The collection creates a \u2018tongue and cheek\u2019 vibe, by including bold colour contrasts, graphic imagery and text. From headless figures to large-scale bananas, this collection screams utter madness\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Q: What career do you aspire to follow\nonto?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI aspire to go into a creative job role, specifically looking into point-of-sale and visual merchandising\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Graphic Communication and Illustration – Anna D\u2019Elia and Amy Bassi<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now onto the floor of my role models and my\ninspiration! The Graphics floor inspired me so much, as I know that in 2 years\nI will be tasked with producing a similar final piece for exhibition. Anna\nD\u2019Elia and Amy Bassi\u2019s PulpItUp campaign caught my eye. They were the winners\nof the live YCN brief for Dalston\u2019s X Fedrigoni to \u2018Create a physical, tactile\ncampaign to super-size awareness for Dalston\u2019s soda – with Fedrigoni Paper and\nthe heart of it.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As seen in the imaged above, they stripped\nback both companies right back to the bare bones, understanding their process\nand shared core company values, thus allowing for an exciting Summer co-brand\nactivation. Whilst further drawing new interest into both companies and\naligning their target audience with the products through this quirky brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Now you\u2019re at the end of your journey\nhere at Loughborough, could you just reflect on how you have developed across\nyour time here?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am inherently interested in how brands use creative immersive storytelling to communicate with audiences. My degree here at Loughborough has nurtured my design skill-set tenfold and I feel I know myself as a designer and my process has developed massively.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Graphic Communication and Illustration – Angharad Davies<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Angharad\u2019s work surrounding illustrated\nweb-comics predicting a world without Graphic design and also, \u2018All aboard the\nstruggle bus\u2019 an illustrated self-help book tailored to millennials (those born\nbetween 1981 and 1996) also caught my eye. I found her comical illustrations\nvery relatable, particularly the one displaying Your Life vs Instagram Life. I\nfound her work very individual and personal, whilst clearly illustrating key\nareas of interest for her young target audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: How would you describe yourself as a\ndesigner\/illustrator and how has your degree developed your practice?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI make humorous illustrations that shed light on contemporary social issues. I often personify animals, plants and inanimate objects to add a light-hearted or humorous touch and allow the audience to look at human behaviour from an unfamiliar perspective. My degree allowed me to interact with people who encouraged me to reject conventional design practices in favour of originality, imagination and holding true to my own values.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
