Hello,\u00a0I am Hannah, and I have just completed my degree in\u00a0Sport\u00a0Management at Loughborough. As you\u00a0can probably guess from the title, I am\u00a0from Wales.\u00a0I\u00a0did not\u00a0really think about the differences\u00a0of living in England compared to Wales before I started university. So,\u00a0for those of you who are\u00a0Welsh and making the move,\u00a0I thought I would share my experiences\u00a0of studying outside the land of song.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Finance\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, I thought I would start with\u00a0a very important aspect of being a\u00a0student,\u00a0finance.\u00a0As a\u00a0Welsh student you will need to go to Student Finance Wales<\/a> to apply\u00a0for funding, which is different\u00a0to\u00a0English students. The website gives you all the information you need regarding\u00a0how and when to apply,\u00a0and\u00a0outlines what financial support is available\u00a0to you.\u00a0The website also gives\u00a0the\u00a0details regarding the Welsh Government Learning Grant,\u00a0which helps with\u00a0expenses while studying.\u00a0I would definitely recommend reading through the\u00a0website\u00a0before you apply\u00a0so you know what you are entitled to.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you speak Welsh?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Be prepared to be asked\u00a0this question numerous times,\u00a0and\u00a0not just during freshers, but\u00a0throughout your whole university experience.\u00a0Having only studied GCSE short course, the best I could do\u00a0were\u00a0simple phrases\u00a0such as \u201cdw\u00a0i\u2019n\u00a0hoffi\u00a0coffi\u201d which means I like coffee for those who\u00a0do not\u00a0speak\u00a0Welsh.\u00a0Nevertheless, these still seemed\u00a0to go down well with those who asked.\u00a0So,\u00a0I would\u00a0certainly\u00a0recommend looking through\u00a0those\u00a0Welsh\u00a0textbooks\u00a0to\u00a0remind yourself on how to say\u00a0those simple\u00a0phrases. For\u00a0those of you who can speak Welsh well,\u00a0knowing Europe\u2019s longest place name\u00a0Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch becomes a really good party trick!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welsh Rugby<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rugby is a big part of the culture in Wales, as\u00a0pretty much everyone I know owns a Welsh rugby top.\u00a0However, being in England you will come across seas of white\u00a0tops\u00a0during the six nations.\u00a0While as a Welsh rugby fan, beating the English is\u00a0a\u00a0top priority, I never anticipated the\u00a0amusement\u00a0of watching\u00a0a\u00a0Wales v England\u00a0match\u00a0with supporters of both sides.\u00a0The English supporters are not as bad as you may think, and they actually can appreciate a decent\u00a0kick.\u00a0So\u00a0definitely\u00a0bring your Welsh\u00a0shirt but\u00a0be prepared,\u00a0the\u00a0England rugby fans are\u00a0just\u00a0as invested as us Welsh!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How far is that away from Cardiff?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unless you are actually from\u00a0Cardiff or Swansea,\u00a0no one really knows\u00a0exactly\u00a0where you are from.\u00a0If you are from South Wales,\u00a0you\u00a0will most likely\u00a0say\u00a0the proximity of your village\u00a0or\u00a0town to Swansea or\u00a0Cardiff.\u00a0If you are from North Wales, the proximity from Liverpool or Chester will\u00a0usually help.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signs\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Something I\u00a0did not\u00a0really think about\u00a0were\u00a0signs.\u00a0Growing up in Wales\u00a0you\u00a0do not\u00a0really know any\u00a0different when it comes to signs, road signs especially, being in\u00a0Welsh and English.\u00a0Until I moved to\u00a0university,\u00a0I\u00a0did not\u00a0even\u00a0think about Welsh not being on almost every sign you read.\u00a0I often found myself skipping lines expecting there to be the\u00a0Welsh translation.\u00a0What is\u00a0even more confusing is adapting back to seeing\u00a0Welsh on the signs when you go back to Wales.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Driving Licence\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another factor I\u00a0did not\u00a0even\u00a0consider\u00a0was my driving\u00a0licence.\u00a0I failed to\u00a0properly\u00a0notice\u00a0that the words driving licence were\u00a0even written in Welsh at the top.\u00a0Take a look, it actually does. I have\u00a0experienced\u00a0the puzzled faces\u00a0of security when they notice\u00a0the \u201cTRWYDDED YRRU\u201d. But\u00a0rest assured, they realise in the end, and\u00a0you will\u00a0be in the pub in no time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOww, what\u2019s occurring?\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everyone loves Gavin and Stacey!\u00a0And from my experience, English people\u00a0seem to\u00a0love it.\u00a0The amount of times I have heard \u201cOww, what\u2019s occurring?\u201d in\u00a0a Nessa voice\u00a0is astonishing.\u00a0However, some people’s\u00a0attempt\u00a0of the accent is\u00a0definitely worth\u00a0it.\u00a0Do be\u00a0prepared to\u00a0rate their accent and hear them repeat it\u00a0quite a few times\u00a0while they try and get it\u00a0spot on.\u00a0I will warn you in advance, if you have got a strong Welsh accent, people will more than likely\u00a0copy some of the way you say words, which provides a lot of entertainment for you. Why some English people have\u00a0such a\u00a0fascination\u00a0with the Welsh accent is beyond me.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wales is quite big\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes roughly 4 hours to get from the North to the South coast of Wales.\u00a0Yes, that is quite a long journey. You will be surprised that many of the people you meet at university\u00a0do not realise how big Wales is.\u00a0Yet, they\u00a0think\u00a0we might live in a field full of sheep. Disclaimer: people do live on farms where there are sheep. However, the majority of people, while they might see sheep from their houses,\u00a0do not\u00a0live with the sheep.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proud to be Welsh!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly,\u00a0be proud of being Welsh.\u00a0Be proud to wear the\u00a0dragon flag.\u00a0Be proud of the fact you know what a Welsh cake is.\u00a0And while being\u00a0over a\u00a03-hour\u00a0drive from home, and having no Welsh on the signs,\u00a0I have personally had an amazing experience studying at Loughborough.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
