Hell<\/span>o! My name is Nyasha and\u00a0<\/span>I am currently a second-year student at Loughborough University studying History and Politics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently,<\/span>\u00a0I\u2019ve been spending quite a bit of time studying<\/span>. W<\/span>ith assessments\u00a0<\/span>fast\u00a0<\/span>approaching,\u00a0<\/span>good study habits have<\/span>\u00a0become\u00a0<\/span>more and mor<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0r<\/span>elevant\u00a0<\/span>for me (<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>I am<\/span>\u00a0sure\u00a0<\/span>they<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0for you too!<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0This will be my second round of exams under lockdown restrictions<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and whist s<\/span>tudying during a pandemic certainly requires some adjustment<\/span>, it is<\/span>\u00a0still very possible!\u00a0<\/span>F<\/span>rom my experience,<\/span>\u00a0I\u2019ll be giving<\/span> 5 tips<\/span>\u00a0to consider when studying during these unprecedented times.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Get into a daily routine<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

Studying during a pandemic can mean lots of work away from school,\u00a0<\/span>which includes set timetables and breaktimes. That\u2019s why creating a routine for yourself is really important!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Setting a schedule for each day will not only help you feel in control, but also gives you direction for the day<\/span>\u00a0so you can focus on what you need to accomplish.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also things to consider like family commitments such as helping around the house<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>exercise,\u00a0<\/span>walking the\u00a0<\/span>dogs<\/span>\u00a0or preparing meals.\u00a0<\/span>I found that creating a schedule allowed me to plan my study sessions whilst also making time for my responsibil<\/span>ities at home<\/span>\u00a0and social time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

In addition, it helps to t<\/span>ry to maintain a consistent time of waking up and going to bed each day.\u00a0<\/span>I suggest\u00a0<\/span>setting an alarm the night before<\/span>\u00a0as it could ma<\/span>ke all the difference!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Identify what needs to be done<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

With many different <\/span>topics to study, <\/span>it can<\/span> sometimes<\/span> feel <\/span>like you have<\/span> a<\/span> million things to do, which can be quite <\/span>overwhelming. <\/span>I have<\/span> found <\/span>that <\/span>writing a list of <\/span>the <\/span>tasks I need to complete makes things so much easier<\/span>, a<\/span>nd often<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>I<\/span> <\/span>quickly find<\/span> that it<\/span> does<\/span>n\u2019<\/span>t <\/span>q<\/span>uite <\/span>add up to a million<\/span>! <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

I like to start off my mornings by writing my main tasks for the day, which are usually <\/span>the <\/span>topics I would like to cover or any written work I might need to complete. <\/span>You <\/span>might want to think about what your goals are for each subject and then break those down into smaller tasks you can complete each day. <\/span>Identifying which tasks need to be completed will help make your studying more focused and can also help you feel more in control<\/span> by allowing you to focus on one item at a time. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Manage your study space<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

I found studying remotely took quite a bit of adjustment<\/span>,<\/span> as I didn\u2019t have access to many of the study <\/span>spaces <\/span>we had available at university such as the library or <\/span>computer labs.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Where you study<\/span> at home<\/span> depends on a lot of things, and everyone has different areas where t<\/span>hey <\/span>feel producti<\/span>ve<\/span> or have access to. So, there<\/span> aren\u2019t hard and fast rules about <\/span>exactly <\/span>where<\/span><\/i> you <\/span>should <\/span>study, but there are a few important things to consider.  <\/span>For example<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>it is<\/span> <\/span>important to make sure wherever you are working is tidy <\/span>and organised<\/span> <\/span>to improve focus and reduce stress.<\/span> Before you study, you can take a few minutes to clear your space and set up your <\/span>workplace<\/span> for the day. This can include <\/span>laying out things like your notebooks, <\/span>textbooks,<\/span> stationery<\/span> and<\/span> <\/span>removing <\/span>any <\/span>distractio<\/span>ns. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Try <\/span>to work in a space where you can sit up straight<\/span>. T<\/span>his<\/span> means you should avoid working from<\/span> places like<\/span> your bed<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>a<\/span>nd l<\/span>et\u2019s be honest<\/span>,<\/span> working from bed is not a great idea<\/span>!<\/span>)<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Study (remotely) with friends<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

If you\u2019re anything like me, <\/span>studying with a friend right by your side<\/span> <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> always <\/span>very<\/span> productive because you end up talking to your friend instead of studying! <\/span>However, <\/span>during lockdown, <\/span>forming a study group <\/span>can be <\/span>helpful<\/span> and a great way to motivate you to keep studying.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In the current climate of social distancing, life can sometimes feel a little lonely<\/span> but o<\/span>ne of the advantages of technology is you can still work together remotely<\/span>. <\/span>My friend and I like to keep an online document open where we can log what we have each studied on a specific day. This helps us keep each other accountable <\/span>and<\/span> motivates us to work that little bit harder. <\/span>You can also go through practice <\/span>essay <\/span>questions or solve problems together over a video call<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Take breaks<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

It<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0important<\/span>\u00a0to take breaks along the way and not overwork yourself.\u00a0<\/span>This will give you time to relax and refresh your mind<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span>help<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0with overall productivity when you do return to study!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also take\u00a0<\/span>longer\u00a0<\/span>time outside of your study sessions to do things you enjoy<\/span>. I love baking, so after a hard day of work I usually take time to bake with one of my\u00a0<\/span>flatmates\u00a0<\/span>(or siblings when I am at home<\/span>) or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>go for a walk outsid<\/span>e.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>During these times, you\u00a0<\/span>need to<\/span>\u00a0give yourself little rewards to keep your motivation high<\/span>, so t<\/span>hink\u00a0about any hobbies or activities you like, and\u00a0<\/span>make sure to conti<\/span>nue doing them during this pandemic!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Final Thoughts<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget that these are <\/span><\/span>particularly challenging <\/span><\/span>times, and you\u2019re doing a great job already by continuing to adapt and study to the best of your ability! <\/span><\/span>Whilst it is<\/span><\/span> important to work hard<\/span><\/span>, make sure you <\/span><\/span>don\u2019t forget to be kind to yourself and acknowledge your small achievements each day<\/span><\/span>.
