When you start your higher education journey you will need to write a p<\/span><\/span>ersonal statement as<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>part<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of your UCAS application when<\/span><\/span> applying to universities. This is very important as it’s one of the few chances you get to let institutions know who you are besides your grades, so here are some top tips to help you writ<\/span><\/span>e the perfect personal statement!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Research the\u00a0subject\u00a0you want to study<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

It can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>your\u00a0<\/span><\/span>personal statement.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I would recommend using university prospectuses and online resources to research the subject you want to study. From this\u00a0<\/span><\/span>think about\u00a0<\/span><\/span>what skills admissions tutors might\u00a0<\/span><\/span>look fo<\/span><\/span>r\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in relation to the course<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and think about how you can demonstrate that you have those skills<\/span><\/span>. It might be useful\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>creat<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a mind map or a plan to help\u00a0<\/span><\/span>keep track and formulate ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Your personal statement gives you the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to admissions that you have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>drive<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and enthusiasm for that subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It is likely that the admissions tutor that is reading your personal statement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>teach<\/span><\/span>es<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that subject<\/span><\/span>\u00a0area<\/span><\/span>, therefore you must show to them that you have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>passion and motivation to study and achieve in that subject. A good way to demonstrate this is to explain your reasoning for wanting to study that subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

DO\u00a0NOT just list the skills you have<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

Whilst it is important to include\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>skills<\/span><\/span>\u00a0you have in your personal statement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0such as leadership or communication<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>W<\/span><\/span>hat is more important is that you explain how you have acquired these skills. For example,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0it may be that through your role as head girl or head boy,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0you developed your verbal communication\u00a0<\/span><\/span>skills as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0had<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to deliver speeches to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>whole\u00a0<\/span><\/span>school in assemblies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Provide lots of examples to support the points you are making\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

Think about how your current studies have given you skills to support you through university.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Part time employment and voluntary work can<\/span><\/span>\u00a0also<\/span><\/span>\u00a0highlight additional skills<\/span><\/span>. If you have any related work experience, this is something you definitely want to be including. Additionally, if you have undertaken any further reading in that subject area this is something you can include<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as it can demonstrate your commitment to the subject. However,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0make sure<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the literature is from a reliable source\/ author and relevant to what you want to study.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Detail extracurricular activities\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

If you take part in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in any extra-curricular activities, for instance playing a musical instrument or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sports team this is something you can include to highlight to admissions tutors the type of person you are. HOWEVER, do<\/span><\/span>\u00a0not<\/span><\/span>\u00a0put too much emphasis on this part of the statement. This should be a very small element of your\u00a0<\/span><\/span>personal\u00a0<\/span><\/span>statement. Areas such as why you want to study that subject, the skills you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0any<\/span><\/span>\u00a0work experience\/voluntary work should be your main focal point and weighted more heavily.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Don\u2019t copy sentences or paragraphs from other personal statements you may have read<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

Personal statements are checked by UCAS for plagiarism<\/span><\/span>, therefore if you are found to have copied sentences from other personal statements or from websites, this could put your application to universities at jeopardy.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Check for spelling and grammar mistakes\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

You want to make a good impression<\/span>\u00a0on the admissions tutors, therefore read through your work to ensure it is free from any spelling and grammar errors. Perhaps, as<\/span>k<\/span>\u00a0a parent,\u00a0<\/span>friend,<\/span>\u00a0or teacher to also read it through to double check it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n addition to this, m<\/span>ake sure you use language you are familiar with<\/span>\u00a0so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>do not<\/span>\u00a0use a thesaurus\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0change every other word<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>You have a limited word count, so it<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>better to cut the\u00a0<\/span>extravagant<\/span>\u00a0language and keep things simple. Make every word count!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Remember\u00a0<\/span>you only have 47 lines to write your personal statement, so make sure it is direct and to the point<\/span>. You are not going to write the perfect personal statement first time round; it will take a few drafts until you are completely happy with it, so stick at it!<\/span>\u00a0Use the opportunity to showcase all the hard work you have been putting in and trust the process<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
