Hi,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0Rebecca and I\u2019m a Mechanical Engineering student at Loughborough\u2019s Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering<\/a>, currently on placement with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Engineering?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

At school, maths and science were my favourite subjects by far\u00a0<\/span>so i<\/span>n Year 12 my Physics teacher<\/span>, a Mechanical Engineer himself,<\/span>\u00a0suggested I apply for a<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>Engineering Experience<\/span>\u00a0residential<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(<\/span>coincidentally <\/span>at Loughborough University!).<\/span>\u00a0 The experience consisted of sample lectures and workshops in 4 different engineering disciplines, with a chance to speak to current students about their university experiences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0I enjoyed\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0so much that I decided to study\u00a0<\/span>Mechanical\u00a0<\/span>Engineering at University.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Why Loughborough?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

I chose Loughborough for its strong links to industry<\/a> and the family feel I got as soon as I stepped onto campus \u2013\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0not called \u2018the bubble\u2019 for nothing! Each year there are a couple of group projects, with one normally sponsored by a company; these are by far my favourite parts of the course! The placement year offered by Loughborough<\/a> is a<\/span>n amazing\u00a0<\/span>opportunity to practice what\u00a0<\/span>yo<\/span>u\u2019<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0learnt and discover what you do (and don\u2019t) like when it comes to working in engineering.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

What\u00a0is it like as a female in engineering?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

Although there are more than 1 million women currently working in STEM in the UK, t<\/span>he<\/span>re is still a big<\/span>\u00a0lack of visibility of<\/span>\u00a0these<\/span>\u00a0women\u00a0<\/span>which can\u00a0<\/span>be disheartening at times<\/span>. Thankfully t<\/span>here\u00a0<\/span>have been<\/span>\u00a0many fantastic initiatives set up in recent years\u00a0<\/span>such as<\/span>\u00a0the FIA\u2019s \u2018Girls on Track\u2019 and Susie Wolff\u2019s \u2018Dare to Be Different\u2019<\/span>\u00a0(for those interested in working in motorsport).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>At Loughborough, there are\u00a0<\/span>great<\/span>\u00a0support networks<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>who help to create a supportive environment\u00a0<\/span>across the university<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ranging from<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>people on your course to lecturers and the various engineering societies<\/a>.\u00a0 Alongside having some incredible friends on my course, I have also been lucky enough to become a STEM Ambassador and mentor young people, particularly girls, of all ages on the wide variety of\u00a0<\/span>jobs available in engineering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Seeing others get excited about engineering<\/span>\u00a0and the work you do<\/span>\u00a0is great motivation to keep pushing for success so that we can be the best role models possible for the next wave of female engineers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
