My name is Lety, I\u2019m a Brazilian<\/span>-Italian Loughborough\u00a0<\/span>Alumni<\/span>\u00a0about to graduate with a First-Class Honours in<\/span>\u00a0Sport Science with Management<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and this is my\u00a0<\/span>Loughborough\u00a0<\/span>j<\/span>ourney<\/span>\u00a0in 11 memories.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 1 \u2013 Arrival<\/h2>\n\n\n

Like most nervous freshers, I remember being both simultaneously excited and anxious during the first few days. As my parents dropped my off at Royce (my home for the next two years), they managed to snap a quick,\u00a0<\/span>yet\u00a0<\/span>obligatory picture of me by the iconic Loughborough sign before leaving me to start my journey. Little did I realise that the next four years would fly by faster than Usai<\/span>n Bolt<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 2 \u2013 My Degree <\/h2>\n\n\n

When I chose to do Sport Science with Management, I had a relatively good idea what I was getting myself into, yet I didn\u2019t expect for my degree to have a substantial amount of practical work. Despite coming as a surprise, the hours I spent in the lab doing hands-on projects were probably the most enriching and valuable learning experiences that I was very lucky to be a part of. As a very visual and kinaesthetic learner, being able to carry out theories and example<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in real-life<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0helped not only reinforce what I already knew, but<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0allowed me to gain new knowledge that would prove useful in the following years.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Memory 3\u00a0\u2013\u00a0AU Football\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

One of my primary goals when coming to university was representing Loughborough through Football<\/a> \u2013 my passion sport. I dedicated hours during the summer months and even arrived a few days early to join pre-season training to try and increase my chances of making it through trials. Rewardingly, my hard work paid off and I made the 4<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0AU team!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being a part of AU was when I truly felt integrated as part of the Loughborough family. Putting on an\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>frican v<\/span>iolet uniform and learning the \u201cLoughborough Walks on Water\u201d chant made me proud to say I came from Loughborough and was an overall incredible experience. It taught me the meaning of dedication, perseverance, and definitely time management! Although I hung up my boots at the end of the season, it\u2019s safe to say I cherished every game and every minute I was on the pitch<\/span>.<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Memory 4 \u2013 Tape on Tape <\/h2>\n\n\n

There are so many ways to enrich your skill set at Loughborough and I felt very privileged to be able to take part in several courses that have enhanced my knowledge and CV. Through my school (SSEHS), I was able to obtain<\/span>\u00a0skills such a<\/span> First Aid and Kinesiology taping<\/span>, among other abilities<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>These are skills that will stay with me for life and that I have been able to use outside of my degree, which is invaluable.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Memory 5 \u2013 LSU Classical <\/h2>\n\n\n

Like sport, music has been an important part of my life. I\u2019ve been playing the violin for 18 years now and, luckily, I continued my musical hobby through one of Loughborough\u2019s many societies \u2013 LSU Classical<\/a>. One of my favourite memories was a concert we held during my second year\u00a0<\/span><\/span>“A Journey Through Time”<\/span><\/span><\/a>. It included all my favourite film music and we had the largest orchestra in Loughborough\u2019s history with over 50 musicians. I can also proudly say that I worked with the Media Rep to design our campaign strategy, which helped us sell out for the first time!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 6 and 7 \u2013 Sport Sec \u2013 Royce Hall Committee <\/h2>\n\n\n

Hall life<\/a> is so special at Loughborough and it\u2019s hard to even describe it to those who have yet to experience it. Like many things at Loughborough, halls and committees are led by students<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0for students and that creates a unique atmosphere where students\u2019 wishes are a priority.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of my 2 years at Royce<\/a>, I spent a year as part of the Royce committee,\u00a0as one of the four sport secs, as well as Royce\u2019s female football captain. Despite being a substantial amount of extracurricular work, it taught me teamwork, leadership\u00a0and events management, which are skills\u00a0for life. It was a rewarding experience, especially as we managed to bump Royce up from 8<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0place to 5<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0place in overall IMS<\/a> ranking, as well as I managed to bump up the female football team from 13<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0to 4<\/span>th<\/span> place. We also won first place for Rugby 13s, Rugby 7s, Table Tennis, Swimming, and Women\u2019s Most Improved Hall. Shout out to my rocks Juan, Jas, and Zander!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 8 \u2013 Placement with Hilton <\/h2>\n\n\n

After being rejected 23 times and a whole lot of perseverance, I\u00a0joined the EMEA Hilton team as a Customer Engagement, Loyalty, and Partnerships Intern\u00a0for my placement year.\u00a0What\u2019s amazing about a year in\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>ndustry is that you learn what the real world of work is really like and it\u2019s truly an eye-opener!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can put theory into practice and learn the tricks and tips of the trade! I never thought I would end up in Hospitality, Travel and Leisure, as my degree is\u00a0in the area of\u00a0Sport, but after spending a year with Hilton, I fell in love with the industry<\/span>.<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Despite being furloughed for the final three months of my journey, I still thank my team for their patience, teachings, and mentorship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 9 \u2013 The Return to AU: Handball\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n

After ending my AU Football journey at the end of first year, I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d come back to represent Loughborough at the AU sport<\/a> level, yet I took a chance and tried out for the AU Handball team. Stepping out of my comfort bumble and trying a new sport was probably both the most challenging and rewarding decision I took for my final year<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0Despite getting injured at\u00a0<\/span>UniChamps<\/span> I can still stay I had an unbelievable AU Handball season, made amazing friends and became a part of an incredible club that gave me the opportunity to put on that A<\/span><\/span>frican<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>v<\/span><\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span><\/span>olet uniform again<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>and represent Loughborough with\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>ride.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 10 \u2013 International Students\u2019 Network (ISN) <\/h2>\n\n\n

Loughborough has a beautifully diverse student body, and being a part of the international community has been very special. When home is so far away, the international community takes you in and creates a home away from home. Being a part of this wonderful\u00a0community encouraged me to take on the Marketing Officer role at the International Students\u2019 Network<\/a> (ISN).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Together with this hard-working committee, I hopefully managed to give back to the international community that has been my family for the past four years. Although with its challenges due to the Covid-19\u00a0pandemic, I personally believe ISN put together an array of interesting and welcoming events and campaigns to keep fostering the spirit of the community in the darkest of times.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Memory 11 \u2013 Graduation: What next? <\/h2>\n\n\n

Like many students, I was not ready to leave the Loughborough\u00a0<\/span><\/span>b<\/span><\/span><\/span>ubble and I\u2019m still not ready. Luckily, Loughborough offered the\u00a0<\/span>Master\u2019s<\/span> d<\/span><\/span>egree I was looking for, so I\u2019m happy to say that I will be pursuing a MSc in International Business<\/a> here next year<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0I look forward to the new challenges, modules, and knowledge I hope to gain from studying a completely new subject from my undergraduate degree. Bring it on!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
